Mucous cells(mucocytes) can occur singly or in clusters, and they have pale and sometimes foamy cytoplasm, a distinct cell boundary, and small, peripherally placed, compressed nuclei. Mucocytes often form the lining of cysts or duct-like structures. Occasionally mucocytes are so scanty that they can be identified with confidence only by using stains such as mucicarmine. 2, record 3, English, - mucocyte

The human lower intestine is populated by an enormous number of microbes... These microbes are separated from the rest of the body by only a thin layer of cells and mucous lining the intestinal tract. As long as the intestinal microbial population does not penetrate the intestinal barrier, they coexist in relative harmony and in fact play a valuable role in digestion and processing of essential nutrients. It is believed that our commensal intestinal population is kept in place, in part, by the extremely active mucosal immune system present in the intestinal lining. 2, record 4, English, - mucosal%20immune%20system

2, record 4, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20immunitaire%20muqueux

The inner surface of the stomach is lined by a mucous membrane known as the gastric mucosa. The mucosa is always covered by a layer of thick mucus that is secreted by tall columnar epithelial cells. Gastric mucus is a glycoprotein that serves two purposes : the lubrication of food masses in order to facilitate movement within the stomach and the formation of a protective layer over the lining epithelium of the stomach cavity. This protective layer is a defense mechanism the stomach has against being digested by its own protein-lyzing enzymes, and it is facilitated by the secretion of bicarbonate into the surface layer from the underlying mucosa. 3, record 5, English, - gastric%20mucosa
