CONT

The principal components of a rig are... a derrick, the drawworks, with its drilling line, crown and traveling blocks, a drilling fluid circulation system, including standpipe, flexible hose, mud tanks and pumps.

CONT

Before cable-tool drilling can begin, a rig must be set at the site. The rig includes a square open tower or derrick about 70 to 180 feet (20-25 meters) high and 20 to 28 feet (6-8.5 meters) square at the bottom.

CONT

The term "drilling unit" as used herein is intended to mean the complete structure of any mobile unit used for drilling purposes, whether afloat or supported by the sea bed and includes all components such as the drilling deck, deck houses, lower decks, barge hulls, caissons, footings, columns, lower hulls, legs, bottom pads or lower mats.

CONT

Types of Drilling Units: ... Self-elevating Drilling Units ...; Column Stabilized Drilling Units ...; Surface Type Drilling Units ...: (a) Ship Type Drilling Unit ...; (b) Barge Drilling Units ...

  • Forage des puits de pétrole
DEF

Ensemble des installations de forage.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
DEF

The movement of drilling fluid out of the mud pits, down the drill stem, up the annulus, and back to the mud pits.

OBS

Normal circulation is downward through the drill stem and back to the surface through the annulus. In some cases, the mud is pumped downward through the annulus and returned to the drill stem, a procedure called reverse circulation.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
DEF

OBS

Cette circulation peut être normale ou inversée.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
  • Equipment (Oil and Natural Gas Extraction)
DEF

A rig that drills for oil and gas.

CONT

An oil rig is a contraption which makes a hole in the ground to allow one to retrieve profitable quantities of oil or gas. It may be as simple as a hammer and a basket lowered on a cable (a "cable tool", still used ... in some parts of West Virginia), but since 1900 a "rig" refers to a rotary drilling rig, wherein a bit is screwed onto the bottom of some pipe, and the pipe is turned at the surface ("rotary") and the whole "drill string" drills a hole into the ground.

OBS

rig : 1. An assembly of hole boring equipment used for drilling for oil or gas. The principal components of a rig... comprise a derrick, the drawworks, with its drilling line, crown and travelling blocks, and a drilling fluid circulation system, including standpipe, flexible hose, mud tanks and pumps.... 2. A self-contained unit equipped with hole boring equipment and used for drilling for oil or gas offshore.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
  • Outillage (Extraction du pétrole et du gaz)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil and Natural Gas Extraction
DEF

To start the mud pump to restore circulation of the mud column.

OBS

Because the stagnant drilling fluid has solidified during the period of no circulation, a high pump pressure is usually required to break circulation.

Subject field(s)
  • Boring and Drilling (Mines)
  • Geological Research and Exploration
  • Economic Geology
OBS

A continental method of shaft sinking through sand which is water-bearing. The shaft is formed by boring in stages, increasing in sizes from the pilot hole of about 4 feet in diameter to the final excavation size. Once the shaft is bored, mud flush circulation continues while the lining is lowered. The lining consists of two steel cylinders, one within the other, and the annular space is filled with concrete. The cylinders are lowered into the shaft and 10-foot lengths are added and welded in position at the shaft top.

OBS
