DEF

A device for cleaning mud and mud filter cake off of the wellbore wall when cementing casing in the hole to ensure good contact and bonding between the cement and the wellbore wall.

CONT

The scratcher is a simple device, consisting of a band of steel that fits around a joint of casing, and stiff wire fingers or cable loops sticking out in all directions around the band (360-degree coverage). A scratcher resembles a bottlebrush, but its diameter is greater than its height. Importantly, for scratchers to be effective, the casing must be moved. This movement may be reciprocal motion in and out of the wellbore, rotary motion, or both. In general, the more motion, the better the cement job will be.

DEF

A small mud pit with a capacity of 10 to 15 bbl, usually with 1 bbl divisions, used exclusively to ascertain the amount of mud necessary to keep the well bore full with the exact amount of mud that is displaced by drill pipe. When the bit comes out of the hole, a volume of mud equal to that which the drill pipe occupied while in the hole must be pumped into the hole to replace the pipe. When the bit goes back in the hole, the drill pipe displaces a certain amount of mud, and a trip tank again can be used to keep track of this volume.

DEF

Water weighs 8. 3 pounds a gallon. Formation pressures can be up to 16 pounds per gallon coming the other way. While you’re drilling that hole and setting those pipes to create a pressure integrity conduit, you use a mixture — barite and other chemicals — so that you take water at 8. 3 pounds a gallon and make it 18 pounds a gallon, and you pump that into the well as you drill the hole. Then that 16-pound-per-gallon force that oil and gas want to come in with, you’re holding that down with the mud at 18 pounds a gallon.

  • Oil Drilling
DEF

The drilling method by which a hole is drilled by a rotating bit to which a downward force is applied.

CONT

During the last 40 years, rotary drilling has become the preferred method for penetrating underground formations... a special tool-the drill bit-rotates while bearing down on the bottom of the well, thus gouging and chipping its way downward... The drill bit is connected to the surface equipment through a drill pipe, a heavy-walled tubing through which the drilling mud is fed to the bottom of the bore hole. In most cases, the drill pipe also transmits the rotation motion from a turntable at the surface to the bit at the bottom of the hole.

OBS

[In this method] the bit is fastened to and rotated by the drill stem, which also provides a passageway through which the drilling fluid is circulated.

OBS

Rotary drilling was first used in 1901 in the Spindle Top field near Beaumont, Texas, but it was not until the 1920’s that this method became the most common one.

When the furnace is in operation, the iron notch is completely filled with a refractory material called tap-hole clay. To cast the hot metal from the furnace, a tapping hole is drilled through this material, and after the cast has been completed, the hole is plugged again with fresh clay that is extruded into the hole from a mud gun.

DEF

An orifice installed in a line to restrict the flow or control the rate of production.

CONT

Surface chokes are part of the Christmas tree and contain a choke nipple, or bean, with a small-diameter bore that serves to restrict the flow. Chokes are also used to control the rate of flow of the drilling mud out of the hole when the well is closed in with the blowout preventer and a kick is being circulated out of the hole.

CONT

A choke is a type of valve with a conical gate and matching seat concentric with the bore of the valve. The choke can be adjusted to give whatever orifice is required to provide a back pressure on the well in order to control it ...

OBS

chk: ... abbreviation for choke; used in drilling reports.

During drilling blowout preventers... are used to shut in and control the well in the event of gas or oil being encountered at pressures higher than those exerted by the column of mud in the hole. They consist of two or three ram preventers and one bag-type preventer...

OBS

The topmost preventer is usually of the bag type that will close around any shape. It consists of a thick annular rubber ring sitting in the bowl of a conical-faced piston.

OBS

A continental method of shaft sinking through sand which is water-bearing. The shaft is formed by boring in stages, increasing in sizes from the pilot hole of about 4 feet in diameter to the final excavation size. Once the shaft is bored, mud flush circulation continues while the lining is lowered. The lining consists of two steel cylinders, one within the other, and the annular space is filled with concrete. The cylinders are lowered into the shaft and 10-foot lengths are added and welded in position at the shaft top.

OBS
