English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

A flood classification between a turbid flood, existing in streams at high elevations, and a mudflow, in which the flow has incorporated earth materials in excess of the stream's bedload capacity yet continues to move down-gradient.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
  • Soil Science
DEF

A condition where there is a river, flow or inundation of liquid mud down a hillside usually as a result of a dual condition of loss of brush cover, and the subsequent accumulation of water on the ground preceded by a period of unusually heavy or sustained rain.

CONT

A mudslide(sometimes called a mudflow) is the most rapid(up to 80 km/h) and fluid type of downhill mass movement comprising of at least 50 per cent silt and clay-sized materials and up to 30 per cent water.

OBS

A mudslide may occur as a distinct phenomenon while a landslide is in progress.

Domaine(s)
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
  • Science du sol
CONT

DEF

... the dislodgement and downslope transport of soil and rock material under the direct application of gravitational body stresses.

CONT

Types of mass wasting : A. Rapid movement : 1. Rock fall; 2. Slump; 3. Rockslide or debris slide; 4. Debris flow or mudflow; 5. Earthflow. B. Slow movement : 1. Creep; 2. Solifluction.

OBS

Includes such gradual movements as creep and solifluction and such rapid movements as to produce rockfalls, landslide and mudflows.

  • Mécanique des sols
DEF
