MUSCLE ATROPHY [14 records]

Record 1 2024-12-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Rehabilitation (Medicine)
CONT

Most tissue healing is happening during the acute phase(first six weeks), so the main priority is to protect the injury. This phase has more intense pain associated with it, so [the] physical therapist may suggest ways to offload the area while introducing some movement to prevent stiffness and atrophy(muscle weakening) as much as possible.

CONT

The Percutaneous Electrical Muscle Stimulator(PEMS) is a research capability that provides stimulation of specific muscle groups in a test subject to study muscle atrophy occurring under weightlessness. It is provided by ESA as part of the NASA Human Research Facility. PEMS will be used in conjunction with MARES [Muscle Atrophy Research and Exercise System] for support in the measurement of the intensity of involuntary muscle contractions. Other features include [the] programmable trains of pulses(pulse width, amplitude, time between pulses) [and] the possibility for adding a randomised delay before the first pulse.

The MARES is aisle mounted, capable of assessing the strength of isolated muscle groups around joints, or complete limbs by controlling and measuring interrelationship between position/velocity and torque/force as a function of time. It has interfaces to the US Lab or Columbus Laboratory. Sensors, direct drive motor, battery and electronics are housed in the "Main Box". Chair and human adapters provide the subject restraints. The Microgravity Isolation Frame, to which the Main Box attaches, minimises disturbances to other payloads. MARES uses the Human Research Facility portable computer (HRF PC) for interacting with the subject/operator. MARES is capable of acquiring data, controlling and providing power to external devices (HRF PC, PEMS, EMG amplifiers, etc.), and transfers real time data to the rack mounted Workstation for downlink. It is capable of 1 hour of stand-alone data collection ...

  • Symptoms (Medicine)
  • Musculoskeletal System
DEF

A gait resulting from hip girdle muscle weakness. The lack of fixation of the hip by the weak gluteal muscles on taking a step makes the opposite side of the pelvis drop producing compensatory lateral movement of the pelvis. Very frequently the hip and back extensors are concomitantly affected, which explains the marked lumbar lordosis with protrusion of the abdomen seen while the patient stands or walks. This type of gait is seen in patients with dystrophic myopathies affecting the hip musculature, in spinal muscular atrophy, and in dislocation of the hips.

Post-polio syndrome is the enigmatic ghost of a once-terrifying disease that had all but vanished into the medical history books.... More than twenty-five years after they seemed to recover, polio victims began to succomb to a new round of weakness, pain, fatigue, and progressive muscle atrophy. But post-polio syndrome(PPS) was accepted as a "real" disease only ten years ago, when former polio victims were finally able to convince the medical community that their new symptoms were not imaginary.
