CONT

No-dig gardening is a method that aims for minimal disturbance of the soil, so that the natural processes can be preserved. This allows the natural organisms to thrive, increasing the soil' s overall health and therefore that of your plants. An example of these organisms is mycorrhizal fungus, which forms a mutualistic relationship with plants and aid in root growth. Digging your garden can break up the fungal threads in the soil, meaning that your plants don’t benefit from these helpful organisms. No-dig gardening allows natural relationships between organisms to flourish and preserves the overall structure of the soil, leading to improved plant growth.

The most suitable option for applying mycorrhizal supplements to trees would be at the time the tree is planted out. Fungal inoculation using spores is not as effective as applying cultures of the fungus in materials such as vermiculite.... Often the inoculum is added at the same time as nutrient supplements but there is considerable evidence that the influence of mycorrhizal infection on tree growth is better when nutrient levels are sub-optimal and pH is low.

CONT

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form mutualistic, symbiotic associations with the roots of more than 80% of land plants1. The fungi are incapable of completing their life cycle in the absence of a host root. Their spores can germinate and grow in the absence of a host, but their hyphal growth is very limited.

DEF

Species of mycorrhizal fungus with hyphae that penetrate and live inside the cortical cells of the plant root.

CONT

Endomycorrhizal fungus ... grows in the roots of grass and many other plants. It forms a partnership with shrubs and grass. The fungus gives the plants minerals like phosphorus. The plant gives the fungus sugars and other carbohydrates.

OBS

There are two types of mycorrhizal fungi: ectomycorrhizae and endomycorrhizae. Ectomycorrhizae form sheaths around plant roots, endomycorrhizae enter cortex cells in the roots.

OBS

A mycorrhiza (typically seen in the plural forms mycorrhizae or mycorrhizas, Greek for fungus roots) is the result of a mutualistic association between a fungus and a plant. This mutualism takes place at the root level, where individual hyphae extending from the mycelium of a fungus colonize the roots of a host plant, either intracellularly or extracellularly.

CONT

DEF

Species of mycorrhizal fungus with hyphae that grow only between the cells and over the surface(outside) of the roots, but do not penetrate the plant cell.

OBS

There are two types of mycorrhizal fungi: ectomycorrhizae and endomycorrhizae. Ectomycorrhizae form sheaths around plant roots, endomycorrhizae enter cortex cells in the roots.

CONT

CONT

Mycorrhizal mushrooms have a symbiotic relationship with plants, usually either trees or shrubs. The underground, vegetative part of the fungus-the mycelium-extracts nutrients from the substrate. The mycelium of a mycorrhizal mushroom sheaths the root ends of the flowering plant, expanding the plant's root system : the mushroom receives necessary carbohydrates from the tree.
