Histoire : La région correspondant aux deux Dakota fut explorée par les Français (Pierre de la Vérendrye, 1738); elle passa aux États-Unis en même temps que la Louisiane (1803) et par le Traité de 1818 avec le Canada. Le territoire du Dakota fut créé en 1861; il correspondait aux deux Dakota, au Montana et au Wyoming. Les Indiens Dakota, dépossédés de leurs terres (Minnesota et Dakota), furent repoussés à l'ouest du Missouri.
