NUCLEAR ELECTRIC PROPULSION [2 records]

Record 1 2025-12-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Ships and Boats
CONT

There are very few icebreakers fitted with steam turbine systems other than nuclear powered vessels. Nuclear powered icebreakers use their steam turbines to generate electrical power to operate electric propulsion motors, in exactly the same way conventional diesel-electric icebreakers operate – only the prime mover is different.

Key term(s)
  • nuclear-powered ice breaker
  • nuclear powered ice breaker
  • nuclear ice breaker
  • atomic ice breaker
  • nuclear-powered ice-breaker
  • nuclear powered ice-breaker
  • nuclear ice-breaker
  • atomic ice-breaker

French

Domaine(s)
  • Types de bateaux
CONT

Key term(s)
  • brise-glaces à propulsion nucléaire
  • brise-glaces nucléaire
  • brise-glaces à propulsion atomique
  • brise-glaces atomique

English

Subject field(s)
  • Missiles and Rockets
  • Spacecraft
CONT

In a nuclear electric propulsion system, heat from a nuclear reactor is converted to electrical energy either by direct thermoelectric or thermionic conversion. NEP provides higher power, thrust, and specific impulse than a SEP [solar electric propulsion] system, although the thrust still pales to insignificance compared to our chemical rockets. For a comparison specific impulse of chemical rockets is about 400secs, Deep Space 1 uses SEP and produces around 3300secs, NEP on the other hand could produce specific impulse as high as 13, 000secs.

DEF

Mode de propulsion nucléaire dans lequel l'énergie produite sert à engendrer de l'énergie électrique qui accélère un agent propulsif.

PHR

Sonde martienne à propulsion nucléoélectrique.
