English

Subject field(s)
  • CBRNE Operations
  • CBRNE Weapons
CONT

Nuclear attack indicators include : warning or threat of an attack or received intelligence, mushroom cloud, exceptionally large/powerful explosion, electromagnetic pulse(EMP).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Opérations CBRNE
  • Armes CBRNE
CONT

Record 2 2011-11-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electromagnetism
  • Atomic Physics
CONT

High-altitude electromagnetic pulse... is an electromagnetic radiation of very short rise time, large amplitude, and brief duration that follows a nuclear explosion above the atmosphere. The area over which a single [high-altitude electromagnetic pulse] event is experienced can be very great if the explosion is high enough and large enough. Several such nuclear explosions might render unprotected electronic equipment and systems inoperative over an area as large as the continental United States.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Électromagnétisme
  • Physique atomique
OBS

Explosions nucléaires.

Record 3 - external organization data 2011-04-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • CBRNE Weapons
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
DEF

A complete assembly (i.e. implosion type, gun type, or thermonuclear type), in its intended ultimate configuration which, upon completion of the prescribed arming, fusing and firing sequence, is capable of producing the intended nuclear reaction and release of energy.

CONT

The electromagnetic pulse generated by the detonation of a single nuclear weapon at high altitudes can be a threat to military systems located as much as a thousand miles away.

OBS

arm: A weapon for use in war (usually "arms").

OBS

nuclear weapon; atomic weapon: terms and definition standardized by NATO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Armes CBRNE
  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
DEF

Record 4 2004-08-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Optical Telecommunications
CONT

Fiber optics depend on pulses of light, transmitted through fine transparent fibers, rather than on pulses of electric current sent through conducting wires. The purpose is to transmit information rather than power. By proper modulation of the light signals, a very wide information bandwidth can be achieved, and because the fibers can be made thin, a large bundle can be accommodated in a single cable of comparatively small diameter. The signals are not vulnerable to eavesdropping, nor are they susceptible to jamming or to transmission of damaging currents due to an electromagnetic pulse from a nuclear explosion. Fiber optics are replacing electric wires for many applications, including computer links.
