What is uranium enrichment? Enrichment is a process that increases the capacity of uranium to fuel a nuclear chain reaction, either for use in nuclear power plants or for nuclear weapons. Uranium primarily occurs naturally as two isotopes : 99. 3% is uranium-238 and 0. 7% is uranium-235. Their atoms are identical except for the number of neutrons in the nucleus : uranium-238 has three more and this makes it less able to fission. Uranium enrichment is used to increase the percentage of the fissile U-235. 2, record 3, English, - uranium%20enrichment

1, record 17, French, - table%20multiparam%C3%A9tr%C3%A9e

Nuclear Power Demonstration reactor. This was the prototype CANDU reactor, and the first power reactor in Canada. It was located upstream of AECL' s Chalk River laboratories, along the Ottawa River's south shore(i. e. in Ontario). The reactor had a maximum continuous output of 22 MWe gross(19. 5 MWe net)... The reactor was built as a joint AECL/Ontario Hydro/Canadian General Electric project, and was initially intended to use a vertically-fuelled pressure vessel reactor. The design was changed in 1957 to natural uranium fuel bundles in horizontal pressure tubes in unpressurized heavy water moderator, with on-line refuelling. These are hallmarks of the CANDU reactor. The reactor had 132 fuel channels(each fuel channel comprised a pressure tube inside a calandria tube) and the coolant leaving the channels was 7. 2 MPa and 277°C. The main reactivity control was by adjusting the heavy-water moderator level, which could be rapidly dumped for fast shut down. NPD was finally shut down on May 5 1987, for economic reasons... 4, record 42, English, - nuclear%20power%20demonstration%20reactor

4, record 73, French, - combustible%20nucl%C3%A9aire

Typically, each [shallow land burial] trench has a sloping floor cut into the natural soil and a French drain of gravel down one of the long sides. The trench bottom is covered with a foot or two of sand to allow water to flow freely into the French drain, especially when the trench is open during operations. Sampling pipes or tubes are placed against the trench wall, with their lower ends in the French drain, when the trench is dug. Monitoring of each disposal unit (engineered trench) is accomplished by sampling any water found in the French drain through these tubes and analyzing its contents. 4, record 76, English, - disposal%20module

All used nuclear fuel in Canada is currently held on site in interim storage facilities, which are safe, secure and environmentally sound. Interim storage of used nuclear fuel at a nuclear facility typically consists of two phases known as wet storage and dry storage. Initially, used nuclear fuel bundles are stored under water in bays or pools after they have been removed from the reactors. These reinforced, leak-proof facilities enable the fuel to cool off in a shielded and secure facility. After 6 to 10 years in wet storage, the used nuclear fuel can be safely transferred to dry storage in concrete canisters, containers or silos. 1, record 87, English, - dry%20storage

2, record 100, French, - moteur%2Dfus%C3%A9e%20nucl%C3%A9aire
