The Laboratory, formerly the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] Marine Environment Laboratory, was established in 1961 in Monaco as part of the IAEA Department of Research and Isotopes and is the only marine laboratory within the United Nations system. It responds to regular requests for technical assistance from other United Nations agencies and programmes, such as the United Nations Environment Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization and the International Maritime Organization. Nevertheless, the promotion of nuclear and isotopic techniques and the improved understanding of marine radioactivity continue to be central to the Laboratory's work.

The French Institute for Protection and Nuclear Safety(IPSN) is investigating the argillaceous formation of Tournemire(France) as a methodological underground laboratory for conducting research on the feasibility of deep geological repositories for radioactive waste in argillites. Because of the very low water content and hydraulic conductivity of the argillites, the migration through this media should be very low. A laboratory has existed in the Chilton site since 1951 when the then Rutherford High Energy Laboratory, an establishment of the National Institute for Research in Nuclear Science was set up. Following mergers with the Atlas and Appleton Laboratories in 1975 and 1979 respectively, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory was formed with a diverse remit to support a wide range of university research activities. Together with Daresburg Laboratory, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory was brought under the umbrella of the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils in 1995.

Parametric Imaging Laboratory(CNRS-University of Paris VI) have opened up a completely new path for research using the potential of quantitative ultrasound imaging. They have developed the first "ultrasound osteodensitometer" with imaging. This is the most precise technique currently available for evaluating the acoustic properties of the bone. It can be used to establish an anatomical comparison of the acoustic properties obtained by ultrasound exploration, and other fundamental properties of bone strength, such as bone mineral density or bone microarchitecture, which are obtained through x-ray imaging or microimaging using nuclear magnetic resonance.
