licence : A right or permission granted in accordance with law by a competent authority to engage in some business or occupation, to do some act, or to engage in some transaction which but for such license would be unlawful... 3, record 1, English, - issue%20a%20permit
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
permit: A written licence or warrant, issued by a person in authority, empowering the grantee to do some act not forbidden by law, but not allowable without such authority. The term "permit" is often confused with "licence," but important differences exist between the two .... In a few dictionaries, however, "permit" is given as a synonym of "licence" or as a type of licence. Thus, although "permit" is usually translated as "permis" the context may require the French term "licence." 3, record 1, English, - issue%20a%20permit

5, record 1, French, - d%C3%A9livrer%20un%20permis
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 3 OBS
Il ne faut pas confondre les termes français «permis» et «licence» [...]. Le mot «permis» s'emploie obligatoirement avec un verbe, ou parfois un nom signifiant une action. Ainsi, on ne dit pas «permis de chasseur», mais plutôt «permis de chasse», «permis de construire» et non pas «permis de construction». Par contre, «licence» n'a pas de telles exigences. Enfin, il faut remarquer que le mot «permis» employé seul désigne souvent le permis de conduire. 5, record 1, French, - d%C3%A9livrer%20un%20permis

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The term "licence" is not invariably translated by the French "licence" although it is in most cases. The reason is that in English the term does not necessarily imply a business or occupation as does the French: "driver’s licence" and "marriage licence" are examples of this. One must therefore be careful in translating "licence"--its usual French equivalent is "licence", but in some cases it can be "permis". An important characteristic distinguishing "licence" from "permit" is the fact that the former is not issued directly by the government but rather by a competent authority or by local authorities, while any of the three groups mentioned can issue a permit. Also, the licence is usually granted for an extended period of time whereas the permit normally authorizes an act of short duration. For example, we say "driver’s licence", but "learner’s permit". 3, record 3, English, - licence

In Canada the British spelling (licence) is used more often than the American spelling (license), although both are found in Canadian texts. 3, record 3, English, - licence

"Licence" is one of two words that in Canadian English are usually spelled differently as nouns and verbs. The preferred spelling for the noun is "licence" and for the verb "license" ... The spellings of the other word are "practice" and "practise". 4, record 3, English, - licence
