Les lettres TLV-TWA sont l'abréviation de Threshold Limit Values-Time Weighted Average. Cette valeur représente la concentration moyenne, pondérée en fonction du temps, pour une journée de travail normale de 8 heures, 5 jours par semaine, soit une semaine normale de 40 heures; c'est la concentration à laquelle presque tous les travailleurs peuvent être exposés, jour après jour, sans que leur santé en subisse d'effet adverse.
