GyroTorque Operating Principle. Gyroscopic reaction torque is generated when precessing a spinning rotor. A very common form of gyroscopic reaction is experienced when riding a bicycle, where the front wheel exhibits the properties of a gyroscopic rotor. If, as is too often the case, an off-balance torque is created by gravitational force, the rider intuitively counters the gravitational torque by turning the handle bar, which, in effect, amounts to precessing the rotor-like front wheel. The faster the bicycle is travelling, the greater is the spin of the front wheel and, hence, the smaller is the precession required to counter the off-balance torque. The operational advantages of GyroTorque result from a novel technique of generation and rectification of gyroscopic reaction torque from a rotor as it is applied to an input-independent output shaft.

Although the Canadian Forces form a single and integrated force, they can hardly be called integrated in any operational sense. The land forces are not specifically trained to operate primarily in conjunction with Canada's sea and air forces as are, for example, the United States Marines. Were that the case, the structural, command and equipment needs of the Canadian Forces would be considerably different than they are now. The air force, for example, would set aside the air superiority role(presumably leaving that role to an allied air force) and concentrate on the fighter-bomber, air-to-ground, role.

A vast amount of sea ice information is today available at the various ice services in the world. Almost all of this information is stored in the form of ice charts for operational purposes. For statistical or climatological use the chart format is however not convenient and the information needs to be digitized. This is done by assigning numerical values to the ice parameters and to read these values at given grid points on the chart. The charts prepared by the various ice services do not all contain the same number of parameters. The resolution and accuracy also vary according to the use for which the charts are intended. A large degree of flexibility has therefore to be built into the design of both code, format and grid. It should allow digitization of historical ice charts as well as current ones in order to obtain a comprehensive computer-compatible sea ice data bank which is currently updated. The SIGRID format is mainly designed to meet larger scale climate requirements but it may also be used by national services for other purposes.

SPADE increased the traffic handling capabilities of INTELSAT satellites and made the establishment of new small capacity links more economical.... In the SPADE system a specific satellite radio-frequency band is divided on the basis of assigning a single data or PCM converted voice channel per RF carrier.... Neither end of a channel is permanently connected with any given terminal, and the channels are paired to form two-way circuits within the demand-assignment pool.
