OPERATIONAL METEOROLOGICAL FORECAST [4 records]

Record 1 2023-03-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
DEF

Office competent to: prepare forecasts under the guidance of a main meteorological office; supply meteorological information and briefing to aeronautical personnel.

CONT

In September 1939 the full-time staff of the [Armed Forces] Meteorological Division numbered 213, of which 51 were meteorologists and 57 were meteorological observers. Over the next 6 years the Division was to recruit and train an additional 350 meteorologists and a large number of assistants in order to open and operate an additional dozen forecast centres and to maintain dependent weather offices at several dozen air training schools and operational war units.

OBS

The term "dependent," when used as an adjective as is the case here, is more frequently written with an "e." "Dependant" with an "a" represents the noun form.

Key term(s)
  • dependant meteorological office
  • dependant weather office

French

Domaine(s)
  • Stations, instruments et équipements météorologiques
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
  • Remote Sensing
CONT

Her interest in history of meteorology is an ongoing project on the history of satellite remote sounding of meteorological data and the controversy over the use of satellite data in the operational weather forecast model.

OBS

meteorological sounding: Determination of the profile of the atmosphere at different altitudes, usually by means of radio or satellite signals.

OBS

remote sounding: The use of remote sensing equipment to observe and measure the characteristics of the Earth’s surface and various atmospheric elements.

OBS

Physical basis of remote sounding. A sounding is a vertical profile of atmospheric temperature, moisture or some other parameter. Soundings, including measurements of total water vapour content, total ozone, cloud height, cloud amount, surface temperature, etc., can be obtained from remote measurements of spectral radiance through carefully selected channels, often in the infrared (IR) or microwave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Record 3 2003-04-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
CONT

Modern operational weather forecasts now include information on the likelihood of various weather events, usually determined through ensemble prediction systems (EPS).

CONT

... ISCS/WAFS [International Satellite Communications System/World Area Forecast System] purpose is to provide the worldwide aviation community with operational meteorological forecasts and information about meteorological phenomena required for flight planning and safe, economic, and efficient air navigation.

CONT

Operational weather forecasts contain information about future weather. To extract the maximum amount of value from such forecasts, they must be integrated into decision making in a rational way. This can be achieved by modelling the impact of weather on the utility of a company.

OBS

Operational forecaster analyzes weather conditions and issues forecasts or alerts the public of severe weather

French

Domaine(s)
