The [study] will... provide an opportunity to present a "characterization matrix" approach to enable a more effective operational determination of what constitute large-scale and small-scale fisheries. This will allow for greater cross-comparability between the... case studies. The characterization matrix, which constitutes a flexible and case-by-case method to describe different categories of fisheries, will be tested using information from a number of regions, covering both marine and inland fisheries.

In 2005, an investigation of fleet size and the capabilities required by the future naval fleet was undertaken on behalf of the Canadian Navy by the Defence Research and Development Canada(DRDC)-Centre for Operational Research and Analysis(CORA) Maritime Operational Research Team(MORT). This work, referred to as the "Fleet Mix Study"(FMS), was completed using Tyche-a computer program that is maintained, developed and validated in-house.

The behaviour of the ionosphere and HF [High Frequency] wave propagation parameters and their possible changes can be described using ionospheric oblique sounding (IOS) data. With the help of this method the maximum observed frequency (MOF), the maximum useable frequency (MUF), the lowest observed frequency (LOF), the number of propagation modes and the signal delays can be determined.

The changing state of the ionosphere is generally monitored by networks of vertical ionosondes. These radars transmit and receive HF(1-30MHz) radio waves to and from the ionosphere directly above the monitoring station. The result is real-time information on the state of the ionosphere needed by communications users allowing them to adapt their operational systems accordingly. The oblique ionospheric sounder extends this idea. The transmitter and receiver of the oblique sounder are not co-located like the vertical but are generally hundreds thousands of kilometres apart. So the instrument is able to study how the radio signals of real communications(below 30MHz) propagate via the ionosphere under a variety of conditions. However the interpretation of the oblique propagation is also significantly harder than the case of the vertical.

In 1990 a research project was funded by the Commission of the European Communities, within the frame of the funding programme EPOCH with the aim of evaluating the possibility of such integration. The project, which title was "A Comprehensive Forecasting System for Flood Risk Mitigation and Control"(AFORISM)(Todini, 1995c) aimed at verifying different approaches in rainfall modelling as well as in rainfall-runoff modelling and their integration in a decision support system both for planning and for real time flood forecasting and management. In order to do so a feasibility study, based upon the Reno river, aiming at integrating all the innovative technologies in an operational decision support tool for flood forecasting and flood impact analysis was carried out by the following research groups.

An account is given of the Antarctic First Regional Observing Study of the Troposphere(FROST) project, which has been organized by the Physics and Chemistry of the Atmospheric Group of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. The goals of FROST are to study the meteorology of the Antarctic, to determine the strengths and weaknesses of operational analyses and forecasts over the continent and in the sourrounding ocean areas, and to assess the value of new forms of satellite data that are becoming available. FROST is based around three one-month Special Observing Periods(SOPs)--July 1994, 16 October-15 November 1994, and January 1995 for which comprehensive datasets have been established of model and situ and satellite observations.
