The term opioid analgesic refers to a broad class of drugs including(1) alkaloids extracted from poppy seeds(morphine, codeine) and their semisynthetic derivatives(oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone) and(2) synthetic phenylpiperidines(meperidine, fentanyl) and synthetic pseudopiperidines such as methadone.
