OBS

Canada's climate change plan calls for a 55 million tonne(Mt) cap on Large Final Emitters and the creation of a carbon offset trading system to achieve these levels. A target price of $15 has been set as the maximum that industry will have to pay to offset one tonne of carbon.... All Canadian companies will have the opportunity to capitalize on reducing carbon emissions starting in 2008, but the credit process and eventual market potential are still unclear. As the system unfolds, it will be important for Large Final Emitters and other companies or individuals to maximize their potential gain.... If companies are able to achieve improve efficiency and share best practices by looking for ways to reduce emissions and trade credits, then the market should expand. Likewise, if firms see a social benefit from minimizing their climate footprint, they will be encouraged to continue.

OBS

"Our success with orange juice has created an opportunity to apply the technology to less acidic fruit and vegetable juices. In addition, we see a growing trend in dairy-based foods which will also benefit from Better Than Fresh TM processing. "Carbon dioxide has been used for years to extend the shelf life of dairy products such as cottage cheese when trace amounts are sparged into product. Praxair's recent testing with its dense-phase CO2 system is producing consistent results including the finding that with the dense-phase CO2 process, the number of spoilage microorganisms is greatly reduced allowing for extended shelf life without subjecting product to detrimental levels of heat in thermal pasteurization.

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

An opportunity to hit to where the opposing player has left a wide gap.

CONT

If one player runs back for a lob and his partner stays up at the net, you’ve been given a gaping opening for your next shot.

CONT

The more successfully you use the offensive lob early in a match, the more it will help you later, because your opponent will back off the net a little, which will open up the lanes more for your passing shots.

OBS

In Spanish there are at least 18 possible ways of translating the generic English term "hole". In tennis, only 2 of the terms are used. The term "agujero", used in many subject fields other than in tennis, refers more often than not to a small hole that usually goes right through an object as in the phrase "un agujero en el pantalón". "Hueco", on the other hand, usually alludes to a hole in the shape of a shaft, tunnel or more specifically in tennis, an alley or lane. Moreover phraseological units containing either of the two terms are not interchangeable. Hence the two terms are very close synonyms but not perfect synonyms. See the usage samples below. Note also that in English the term "opening" may also have different meanings : 1) an opportunity to break even or break ahead 2) a spot on the court that is not being covered by one's opponent.

OBS

Related phraseology: alley, occasion, opportunity, (to place the ball into the) open court, open space, gap, vacant ground, to leave part of the court unattended/wide open, to open up the court.
