OPPOSED ENGINE [5 records]

Record 1 2021-04-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Motors (Machinery)
DEF

An internal-combustion engine having cylinders arranged by pairs on opposite sides of the crankshaft and in one horizontal plane.

CONT

Horizontally opposed engines have a lower overall height than general series and V-type engines due to the structure of the piston being horizontally arranged in the crankcase. It makes the engine lightweight, compact and it lowers the vehicle's center of gravity.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Flights (Air Transport)
DEF

A visible cloud streak, usually brilliantly white in colour, which trails behind a missile or other vehicle in flight under certain conditions. [Definition standardized by NATO.]

DEF

A trail of water droplets or ice particles produced by an aircraft engine exhaust when the humidifying effect of the water vapour exceeds the opposed heating effect of the exhaust.

OBS

contrail: term standardized by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

OBS

condensation trail: term standardized by NATO.

OBS

These terms are not to be confused with distrail, exhaust trail, or aerodynamic trail.

OBS

condensation trail; contrail: terms officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

DEF

Record 3 2002-07-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astrophysics and Cosmography
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
CONT

To recover from the microburst, the crew apply maximum power and pitch up toward an angle that can attain 15 degrees. The inertial acceleration(acceleration in reference to the ground, as opposed to acceleration within the airmass) experienced by the pilots, combined with the unstable attitude of the aircraft may cause a dangerous illusion. The pilots may believe that the aircraft has reached a very high excess energy and thus, try to pitch down or reduce the engine power. In reality, the aircraft performance is still low as it penetrates the energy-reducing downdraft and tailwind components of the microburst.

  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
CONT

Rossby (nombre de) : Quantité sans dimension, utile dans l'étude du mouvement des atmosphères planétaires et égale au rapport de l'accélération inertielle (force d'inertie) à l'accélération de Coriolis due à la rotation de la planète.
