An array of nanosized objects, especially one of nanosized spots that have unusual optical characteristics.

By orienting and networking such wires, nano-circuitry can potentially be created, which may be of value in the computer industry. The nanostructures can also be incorporated into coatings with optical, electric, magnetic, catalytic, or enzymatic moieties as functional units. A nanoarray is a nanoscale or microscale ordered arrangement of nanotemplates and/or nanostructures. A nanoarray, therefore comprises an ordered array of nanostructures. A nanoarray can have any type of long range packing symmetry, including 2-, 3-, 4-, or 6-fold packing symmetry. The nanoarray can be a one-dimensional structure, a two-dimensional array, or a three-dimensional array. In a specific embodiment, where the nanoparticles are dielectrics, a three-dimensional nanoarray can be a photonic bandgap crystal. Optimal conditions for assembly and crystallization of a nanoarray... are easily determined by routine experimentation, such as by changing each variable individually and monitoring formation of the appropriate products.

We examine how synthetic dynamic nanostructured surfaces control the attachment of pathogenic biofilms. The parameters governing long-range patterning of bacteria on high-aspect-ratio (HAR) nanoarrays are combinatorially elucidated, and we discover that sufficiently low effective stiffness of these HAR arrays mechanoselectively inhibits ~40% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm attachment. Inspired by the active echinoderm skin, we design and fabricate externally actuated dynamic elastomer surfaces with active surface microtopography.

The ESA facility MOMO MOrphological transition in transparent MOdel materials is designed to study directional solidification of optically transparent melts. It investigates the effect of gravity on the formation of growth morphologies.

The key element of the MOMO experiment assembly is a Bridgman furnace for low temperatures(< 100°C). The furnace generates a temperature gradient over a cylindrical glass ampoule containing the sample. The sample material for the first two flights was a succinonitrile(SCN) based compound, which has solidifying structures similar to those of a metal alloy. The furnace is accommodated on a linear drive, which can be moved over the sample ampoule for directional solidification. An endoscope from the liquid side of the sample provides optical observation of the solid-liquid interface. Recorded images are analysed after the experiment to determine parameters of the solidifying morphological structure.

The Rocket Assembly/Checkout Facility... The facility consists of six contiguous laboratory modules subdivided into a storage area, a gray room area, and a clean room. The storage area houses spare instrument components and intermittently used ground support equipment. The gray room area contains facilities to clean components before they enter the clean room and equipment used to ship the instrument to WSMR [White Sands Mission Range]. The Class 100 cross-flow clean room is separated from the gray room by an air shower. The clean room contains three major stations : a clean bench for assembly of subsystems; a 12x14-ft optical bench for instrument assembly and electronic test of the instrument subsystems; and a vacuum chamber for vacuum focus and spectroradiometric calibration. The cryogenically pumped vacuum chamber is designed with a 30-cm diameter ultraviolet collimator at one end and a roll-off section that accommodates the entire flight instrument centered in the collimated beam at the other end.

The main units of the AIC are : the focal plane assembly(FPA), equipped with a back-thinned illuminated CCD matrix and a front-end amplifier, provides the optical signal detection. A thermoelectric peltier cooler under the detector sets the operating point at-25°C ± 100 mK, the detection box(BD) which supplies the FPA with the necessary electrical signals to operate the CCD. It generates the clock waveforms from the VEU signals and filters the supplied voltage from the DSU, the video electronics unit(VEU) which processes the analog signal coming from the FPA, digitizes it on 12 bits before passing it on in serial processing to the science data processing subsystem(SDPSS). It also provides the DBs with the primary clock signal. The power conditioning of the VEU is located in the same unit, the detection supply unit(DSU) delivers relevant stabilized voltages to the 5 DUs and power to thermo-coolers from the main supply feeder of the instrument.

Le Radiomètre Avancé à Très Haute Résolution (AVHRR) est un instrument imageur multi-spectral qui s'est montré précieux dans de nombreuses applications de toutes sortes dans le monde entier. AVHRR/3 est la dernière version embarquée à partir de NOAA-K sur les satellites américains et sur les satellites Metop d'EUMETSAT. The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer.
