An effective laser also needs to have an optical resonant cavity in which the photon emission is amplified. This resonant cavity is a Fabry-Perot etalon... The etalon, consists of two parallel, semi-reflecting mirrors. The etalon is a Fabry-Perot interferometer whose mirrors are separated by a fixed distance. Electromagnetic radiation passes through the first half-silvered mirror(left-hand side). The radiation can then either be transmitted through or reflected by the second mirror. If the radiation is reflected, more electron-hole pairs are stimulated to emit radiation. Constructive interference occurs between the reflected wave and the more recently emitted wave, and the radiation is amplified. 10, record 1, English, - resonant%20cavity

NIST [National Institute of Standards and Technology] researchers have implemented a novel approach to cavity ring-down spectroscopy(CRDS) using pulsed lasers. The ring-down method exploits the finite lifetime of light within an optical resonator, which is manifest as an exponential decay of the photon flux exiting the cavity. This lifetime measurement can be used to determine the presence of trace quantities of gaseous molecules, because the photon lifetime decreases as a result of light absorption within the cavity. 2, record 2, English, - lifetime%20measurement

Lifetime measurement. The activity (in decays per second) of some radioactive samples varies in time in a particularly simple way. If the activity (R) in decays per second of a sample is proportional to the amount of radioactive material (R [alpha] N, where N is the number of radioactive nuclei), then the activity must decrease in time exponentially … 3, record 2, English, - lifetime%20measurement

Like a VCSEL [vertical cavity surface-emitting laser], an RCLED [resonant cavity light emitting diode] contains a very thin optical cavity, formed by sandwiching a layer of active material between two multilayer mirrors. However, since the device doesn’t actually lase, the mirrors don’t need to be as highly reflective as they are in VCSELs.
