A valve is attached to the shunt tubing. It controls the direction the cerebrospinal fluid flows and keeps a normal amount of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles. Un système de shunt est un corps étranger sur lequel peuvent se fixer des bactéries. Habituellement, l'administration d'antibiotiques n'est plus d'aucune utilité. La seule solution est alors l'enlèvement du système. La période qui s'écoule jusqu'à la mise en place d'un nouveau shunt doit parfois être surmontée en plaçant une tubulure vers l'extérieur, un drain externe. Enfin, il peut arriver que, par siphonnage, une quantité trop importante de liquide céphalorachidien s'écoule par le système. C'est ce que l'on appelle surdrainage. Cela peut provoquer des symptômes, même si ce n'est pas toujours le cas. Lorsque les ventricules sont très volumineux et qu'il y a un surdrainage, il existe un risque d'épanchement de sang entre le cerveau et les méninges, ce que l'on appelle hématome sous-dural. 1, record 1, French, - surdrainage
