OVERSPEED CONTROL [11 records]

Record 1 2019-02-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Railroad Safety
CONT

In 2008, Congress required railroads install positive train control(PTC) on mainlines that transport any poisonous-inhalation-hazardous(PIH) materials and where regularly scheduled intercity passenger or commuter rail services are provided. PTC uses communication-based/processor-based train control technology that provides a system capable of reliably and functionally preventing train-to-train collisions, overspeed derailments, incursions into established work zone limits, and the movement of a train through a main line switch in the improper position.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sécurité (Transport par rail)
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Railroad Safety
  • Rolling Stock (Railroads)
DEF

[Brake] application operated at service rate that can be activated by one of the following safety devices of the locomotive : the overspeed control, the reset safety control(RSC) or the safety control foot valve.

CONT

A penalty brake application is similar to a full automatic brake application. However, this type of braking further reduces the brake pipe pressure to zero, requiring a moving train to stop and recharge the brake pipe. This type of braking occurs as a result of a “penalty” applied by the system, such as when the reset safety control (RSC) is not reset.

  • Matériel roulant (Chemins de fer)
DEF

Record 3 2013-06-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electric Rotary Machines
  • Wind Energy
DEF

The method or methods used to prevent the wind machine from exceeding the design maximum rpm [revolutions per minute].

OBS

Distinctions for control are made on the basis of input signal (e.g. centrifugal forces, tachometer), the method of converting that signal to a response (e.g. mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, hydraulic, or other), and the type of response (e.g. blade feather, tail fold, change in orientation).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Machines tournantes électriques
  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

DEF

[A vane used] for [the] overspeed control on American farm windmills [and oriented] in the same plane as the rotor disk.

OBS

This vane extended beyond the sweep of the rotor and was intended to furl the rotor during high winds.

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mechanical Components
  • Wind Energy
DEF

Means of overspeed control incorporating a plate located at the end of a wind turbine such that when deployed the plate dramatically increases drag.

OBS

The term [tip brake] is sometimes incorrectly applied to pitchable blade tips.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Composants mécaniques
  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Systems
CONT

Overspeed conditions can occur in an engine for a number of reasons, such as for example, a sudden unforeseeable reduction in the engine load, a failure in the metering valve of the engine's fuel delivery system, or an erroneous signal from an associated electronic engine control(EEC) which modulates the metering valve to an excessively high flow setting. It is known to provide an overspeed protection system that monitors a speed of the engine, such as the rotational speed of the power turbine of a gas turbine engine, and upon detection of an overspeed condition will reduce or stop the flow of fuel to the engine from the fuel delivery system.
