With the growing need for flexibility... an embedded parallel computer is needed that finds the optimum balance between all of the available forms of parallelism, yet remains programmable. Embedded computation requires more generality/flexibility than that offered by an ASIC [application specific integrated circuit], but less generality than that offered by a general purpose processor. The DC motor can be made to run faster than the basic "balancing speed" achieved whilst in the full parallel configuration without any resistance in circuit. This is done by "field shunting". An additional circuit is provided in the motor field to weaken the current flowing through the field. The weakening is achieved by placing a resistance in parallel with the field. This has the effect of forcing the armature to speed up to restore the balance between its magnetic filed and that being produced in the field coils. It makes the train go faster.

An open circuit system is composed of magnetic detectors or contacts that are "normally closed. "That means that their contacts are separated when the door or window is in the normally closed position. When the door or window is opened, the contacts are released, causing them to close. This allows current to flow through the wires, and the alarm sounds. All the contacts and detectors are wired in parallel. This means that current flows ONLY when any contact or detector switch makes contact.

The progression of troubleshooting algorithms is based upon a qualitative approach... The method... is based upon the fundamental idea of a circuit, and is similar to that of the zero-order models... In a series circuit, one source of faults is the occurrence of opens within either of these paths, which will prevent current from flowing... Another source of faults is the presence of shorts to ground, which introduces non-resistive parallel paths into the circuit.... Opens and shorts to ground are types of faults that the troubleshooting algorithm is designed to diagnose.

Parallel Circuits-A parallel circuit is one in which the electric detonators are connected to two common points. Each detonator in a connexion of this kind offers a path for the electric current independent of all the other detonators in the circuit, and therefore calls for a higher amperage requirement than a series circuit in which there is but one path.... A parallel circuit is characterized by comparatively low voltage and high amperage requirements, and because of this it is advisable to use a heavier shot-firing cable. The disadvantage is that it is not possible to test the circuit as a whole by means of a circuit tester.

Gravimetric Loop machine... This is essentially for use in a binary fluid circuit... Three parallel fluid columns of considerable height(64 m in a prototype) are arranged to form two loops, the central column being common to both. In the left-hand loop a refrigerant(e. g. freon 11) is pumped counter-clockwise round the loop : in the right-hand loop, water is circulated clockwise by gravimetric forces. The bottom of the water loop is heated by geothermal fluid. The heated water, on contact with the freon at the bottom of the central column, causes the latter to boil, and the released freon bubbles give buoyancy to the fluid in this column so that the water and boiling freon rise to the top where the two fluids, being immiscible, are separated... The different densities of the fluids in the right-hand and central columns provide the driving head for the turbine.

The American Standards Association defines a split-phase induction motor as "a single-phase induction motor equipped with auxiliary winding, displaced in magnetic position from, and connected in parallel with, the main winding".(...) The auxiliary winding, often called the starting winding, has a switch in series with it, so that the starting circuit is opened after the motor reaches a predetermined speed.
