CONT

Magneto-optics is the study of effects arising from the interaction of light with magnetized media. Initially linearly polarized light, after interaction with such materials, can exhibit both ellipticity and a rotation of the polarization state. These effects are generally categorized into two phenomena, the Faraday Effect which occurs when electro-magnetic radiation is transmitted through a magnetized media, and the Kerr Effect which deals with reflections from the magnetized media. The Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect(MOKE) is further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence... If the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect. As a matter of simplification, near normal incidence is usually employed when doing experiments in the polar geometry. In the longitudinal effect the magnetization vector is parallel to both the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization is perpendicular to the plane of incidence and parallel to the surface it is said to be in the transverse configuration.

When the air moisture content is high, bands of clouds which vary in thickness and length form parallel to the relief. The most celebrated case was Stockholm, where the famous 1952 General Plan of Sven Markelius and Göran Sidenbladh developed systematic pyramids of density around the stations, and also provided service and other jobs in district centres around these same stations, with the idea that as many as one third would find jobs in the places where they lived(Hall 1992a; Hall 1997).

DEF

The distance between internal surfaces of windows of the absorption cell, or the thickness of a homogeneous, isotropic nonmetallic sample with smooth, plane, parallel surfaces. The path length is measured through the cell/sample in the direction of the beam of light which is being absorbed and is expressed in centimetres.

OBS

The term absorption path length is used in spectrophotometry.

Subject field(s)

OBS

If illuminated with white light, plates of anisotropic crystals viewed(off extinction) between crossed or parallel nicols will appear colored. These colors, known as interference colors, result from the unequal transmission by the analyzer of the component wavelengths of the white light.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Minéralogie
OBS

"Les corps des systèmes autres que le système cubique agissent sur la lumière polarisée": ils la décomposent en deux rayons vibrant dans deux plans perpendiculaires, mais que le nicol analipeur amène à vibrer dans le même plan. Les deux vibrations peuvent alors interférer: pour la lumière du jours certaines couleurs s'annulent alors, les autres se combinent en une couleur composée et la plaque mince apparaît colorée: on a des "teintes de polarisation".
