En réalité, ces rayons sont parallèles, mais à cause de l'effet de parallaxe, on dirait qu'ils convergent vers le soleil. Cet effet rappelle les rails d'un chemin de fer qui semblent converger quand on les regarde au loin. La couleur de ces rayons est souvent dans les teintes de rouge ou jaune, tout simplement parce que le bleu a déjà été diffusé par les molécules d'air.

When the angle of ice steepens, and more security than the cross-body technique(piolet ramasse) provides is desirable, the axe is planted in the anchor position(piolet ancre)... : with the outside hand just above the spike, the axe is swung so that the pick is anchored in the ice in front and above the climber's head with the shaft parallel to the slope. The inside hand reaches up and grasps the axe head in the self-arrest position. By pulling down on the anchored axe, the climber steps up to a new in-balance position. A gentle and constant outward pull must be kept on the shaft to set the teeth and keep the axe locked into the ice. The axe is removed by pushing the shaft toward the ice and lifting the pick up and out of the ice.

When the slope becomes too steep to descend facing outward, the climber faces sideways and descends diagonally .... Footwork changes from the duck walk (en canard) to the same flat-foot technique which was used to ascend diagonally. The axe is used in the anchor position (piolet ancre): with the outside arm, the climber swings the axe out in front and plants the pick in the ice, then flat-foots diagonally down below the axe. The shaft rotates as the climber passes below it.

The aircraft proceeds to a corner of the search area and, flying at the allotted height, sweeps the area maintaining parallel tracks, the first of which is at a distance equal to the sweep width from the side of the rectangular area. Successive tracks are flown parallel to each other but at twice the sweep width apart. This type of search may be carried out by one aircraft or by several aircraft flying parallel tracks or each searching smaller rectangular areas separately.

The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks raised many safety and security concerns along the international boundary. Some concerns regarding vegetation and trees obstructing the boundary vista were addressed with two additional projects that were carried out during October and November. These involved vista-clearing along the 45th Parallel(the Quebec-Vermont/New York border), in particular along the major road crossings; and along the South Line(Quebec-Maine border).

From the top of Big Baldy, a series of parallel chutes run through trees. They join with the NE facing slopes below the ridge at 7400 feet... Below 7400 feet, the track follows the canyon bottom. A full-path slide will cover the floor of Providence Canyon. The avalanche triggered in the 3/12/97 incident ran the full length of the path.

Because impurities in the anodes dissolve in the bath as they are consumed, pure carbon(calcined petroleum coke or pitch coke) is used as raw material. The ground coke is mixed hot with enough coal tar or petroleum pitch to bond it into a block when pressed in a mold to form the "green" anode. This is then baked slowly at temperatures up to 1100-1200 °C.

The cleaned and tempered wheat is now subjected to a series of grinding operations, of which the first five or six sets of rolls exert a crushing and shearing action. Known as the break system and designed primarily to bring about a far-reaching separation of the tough bran from the friable endosperm, this part of the grinding process is carried out on corrugated iron rolls, called break rolls, which revolve in opposite directions at different speeds. Each successive set of rolls takes the stock from the preceding one, after proper separation, so that they operate serially rather than in parallel. Proceeding from the first to the fifth or sixth break, the corrugations on the rolls become finer and the setting of the rolls progressively closer.

The term "break roll" is used to designate a "break rollermill" itself and the plural often designates an entire group of break rollermills. This is due to the fact that the heart of any rollermill is one or more pairs of cast-iron rolls.
