Massively parallel architecture. Some modern supercomputers have thousands of simple processors. Complex mathematical tasks are split up into thousands of tiny sub-tasks, and each sub-task is given to a single processor. Dans le domaine de la production améliorée des bruts lourds, on peut distinguer 5 méthodes : - injection de vapeur : cette méthode est la plus couramment employée dans le domaine de la récupération améliorée. Deux principales stratégies peuvent être adoptées : 1) celle de la stimulation par injection cyclique («Huff and Puff»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur de façon discontinue (cyclique) et de récupérer l'huile au même endroit. Cette technique a l'avantage de produire rapidement de l'huile, donc d'augmenter la productivité, cependant elle ne permet pas un taux de récupération élevé des huiles en place; 2) celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur («Steam Drive»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur sur une longue période à partir d'un puits spécifiquement dédié à cette fonction et de récupérer l'huile dans d'autres puits situés aux environs. Cette technique, à l'inverse de celle à injection cyclique, permet d'atteindre de façon progressive un taux de récupération élevé. Parmi ces technologies, on pourra distinguer celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur par zone annulaire chauffée («Heated Annulus Steam Drive») et celle de drainage gravitaire renforcé par la vapeur («Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage»). La deuxième (SAGD) commence à faire ses preuves aujourd'hui. Elle permet, par l'utilisation de puits horizontaux multidrains, d'améliorer considérablement la productivité et le taux de récupération des huiles en place, tout en minimisant l'utilisation de vapeur.

The Hydro/AECL design team met this challenge by introducing a highly innovative containment concept-what was to become known as the negative pressure containment system. As a result, the pressure in the reactor building is quickly reduced to below atmospheric pressure, thereby positively preventing the escape to the environment of any radioactivity released inside the reactor building as a result of the accident.

Waves are formed due to the friction of the wind over the water surface. The three main components for wave generation are the wind speed, it's duration and fetch.... How to recognise a swell/wave generating area. On a weather chart there are high and low pressure systems. They are separated by isobars(lines joining places of equal pressure). Buys Ballot's law states :"If you stand with your back to the wind in the northern hemisphere, the low pressure will be on your left. "From this you can deduce the wind flows anticlockwise around a low pressure system and almost parallel to the isobars. The wind near the surface actually flows at an angle of about 15 degrees to the isobars pointing in to the low. The reason for this is that friction with the surface slows the air down and it is this friction which causes waves to form. Assuming you have identified an area of closely packed isobars which are almost straight for 200 miles and the low system is not changing to quickly, you have found a good swell generating area.

In parallel, Scandinavian planners had been adopting versions of what in Copenhagen was called the finger plan : they put new settlement like beads on a string along public transport routes, in the case of Copenhagen a light rail system, in Stockholm a new underground railway. Correction Lines.... the meridians are converging lines that meet at the poles. Like the meridians, the range lines also converge as the run north from the 49th parallel. As a result, the top or northern border of any town ship must measure slightly less in distance than its base or southern border.... This, of course, was a situation that the surveyors wanted to avoid, since the whole intent of the grid system was to create parcels of land of approximately the same size. To reduce distortion caused by the converging range lines, the surveyors used the following method. The second township line north of the 49th parallel and every fourth township line thereafter were established as correction line. At each correction line, the range line is displaced a certain distance. This jog, as it is called, in effect increases the area of the townships north of each correction line, thereby compensating somewhat for the convergence. The jogs in the range lines west of any meridian are accumulative. That is, if you follow a correction line west from any meridian, you will find that the jogs you first encounter are very small. The jogs increase as you move west from range line to range line.

With a part-time/full-time system, users expect to employ four-wheel drive on the highway. But accepted practice held that a planetary or bevel gear differential was needed to prevent generation of wind-up torques on a dry road. Designs without mechanical differentials have long been known to cause particular problems during tight turns and parallel parking, when wheels on one side of the vehicle travel a different distance than wheels on the other side. Forcing all four wheels to operate in synchronization during such maneuvers causes drive-line wind-up.

Two types of plants are used to make hot mix asphalt concrete, the batch type mixing plant and the drum mix plant A batch plant mixes, then drops individual batches of hot mix asphalt concrete and a drum mix plant is a continuous flow type of production plant. In a batch type mixing plant different sizes of aggregates are drawn from a multi-bin cold feed system into an enclosed counter flow rotary drum. After the aggregate is dried, it is lifted to the top of the batching tower and on to a screen system which separates the aggregate into different sizes and then drops the different sizes into individual bins. Aggregate is then drawn from the hot bins in predetermined amounts, weighed and dropped into a pug mill mixer with the correct amount of liquid asphalt. The batch is mixed, then dropped into a waiting truck or sent to a surge bin until trucks arrive. In a drum mix plant a metered, four compartment, cold feed bin system supplies the exact amount of the required size of aggregates to the rotating drum mixer The drum mixer is an inclined, parallel flow dryer/mixer in which the aggregate is dried and heated in the upper section of the drum, then mixed with liquid in the lower part of the drum. From the drum the hot mix is discharged into a hot elevator which lifts the finished product to a surge hopper or storage silo both equipped to load trucks.

The Vision Skin sensor is designed to do accurate range sensing and close range imaging in approximately the 1 cm distance range. It utilizes an array of collimated holes as individual parallel pin-hole cameras to perform close range lens-less imaging. When a laser diode is added to the system, triangulation is used to determine the distance of the surface. The sensor can switch between imaging mode and range mode simply with software and lighting control.
