Subject field(s)
  • Titles of Programs and Courses
  • Engines (Motor Vehicles)
OBS

A demonstration program for automotive gas turbine engines incorporating ceramic components; the propram was started in 1980 and funded entirely by DOE(USA). Two parallel contracts have been issued, one to the Detroit Diesel Allison Division of GM for the AGT-100 program, the other to the GARR/FORD team for the AGT-101 program.

Record 4 2008-09-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mechanical Transmission Systems
  • Wind Energy
DEF

A wind turbine gearbox which incorporates a common arrangement of gears where the shafts of each gear parallel those of the others.

OBS

A parallel shaft gearbox features gears that occupy more space and weigh more than a planetary transmission, but are quieter.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Transmissions mécaniques
  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

Record 5 2007-07-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Medical Instruments and Devices
  • Respiratory System
CONT

Flow-type spirometers... are lightweight and portable because their components are small, but their mechanical operating characteristics are complex... Different flow-type spirometers measure :(1) pressure differentials created as expired air passes through an orifice or across a resistance element, [for example], composed of parallel capillary tubes or a mesh screen(pneumotachometer) ;(2) rotation speeds of a turbine as expired air flows across it(turbine) ;or(3) electrical current required to maintain the temperature of a heated wire as expired air flows across it(hot wire anemometer).

Key term(s)
  • flow type spirometer

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments et appareillages médicaux
  • Appareil respiratoire
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
CONT

Engine Thermocouples Out of Calibration. When thermocouples are subjected for a period of time to oxidizing atmospheres, such as encountered in turbine engines, they will drift appreciably from their original calibration. On engine parallel harnesses, when individual thermocouples can be removed, these thermocouples can be bench checked, using one heater probe.

CONT

Gravimetric Loop machine... This is essentially for use in a binary fluid circuit... Three parallel fluid columns of considerable height(64 m in a prototype) are arranged to form two loops, the central column being common to both. In the left-hand loop a refrigerant(e. g. freon 11) is pumped counter-clockwise round the loop : in the right-hand loop, water is circulated clockwise by gravimetric forces. The bottom of the water loop is heated by geothermal fluid. The heated water, on contact with the freon at the bottom of the central column, causes the latter to boil, and the released freon bubbles give buoyancy to the fluid in this column so that the water and boiling freon rise to the top where the two fluids, being immiscible, are separated... The different densities of the fluids in the right-hand and central columns provide the driving head for the turbine.
