Teriparatide is a synthetic form of the natural human parathyroid hormone and is used by injection to treat osteoporosis. Teriparatide forms new bone, increases bone mineral density and bone strength, and as a result reduces the chance of getting a fracture(broken bone). Teriparatide can be used by men or postmenopausal women with osteoporosis who are at high risk for having fractures.

Hyperparathyroidism due to neoplasms or idiopathic hyperplasia of the parathyroid glands.

Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone(PTH). The parathyroid hormone regulates calcium and phosphate levels and helps to maintain these levels. Excessive PTH secretion may be due to problems in the glands themselves, in which case it is referred to as primary hyperparathyroidism and which leads to hypercalcaemia(raised calcium levels).
