CONT

The pathogenesis of EVALI is not known. EVALI appears to be a form of acute lung injury with pathologic findings of acute fibrinous pneumonitis, diffuse alveolar damage, or organizing pneumonia, usually bronchiolocentric and accompanied by bronchiolitis... EVALI may reflect a spectrum of disease processes, rather than a single process.

OBS

Recent testing has detected vitamin E acetate in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples from a convenience sample of 29 patients with EVALI ...; however, evidence is not yet sufficient to rule out contributions of other chemicals of potential concern contributing to EVALI.

Subject field(s)
  • Human Diseases
DEF

A febrile disease occurring as a delayed sequela of infections with group A hemolytic streptococci and characterized by multiple focal inflammatory lesions of the connective tissue structures, especially of the heart, blood vessels, and joints (polyarthritis), and by the presence of Aschoff bodies in the myocardium and skin.

CONT

Rheumatic fever(RF) is a systemic illness that may occur following group A beta hemolytic streptococcal(GABHS) pharyngitis in children. RF and its most serious complication, rheumatic heart disease(RHD), are believed to result from an autoimmune response; however, the exact pathogenesis remains unclear.

CONT

A genetically determined, chronic epidermal proliferative disease of unpredictable course. Onset is most frequent in early adult life, but it may begin at any age. Once the disease becomes manifest, it may remain localized to a few areas or may cause intermittent or continuous generalized disease. The pathogenesis of psoriasis is unknown, but it appears to be a multifactorial disease in patients who are genetically predisposed.

CONT

The pathogenesis of AIDS is dependent on the biology of HIV, e. g :"Trojan horse" mechanism-virus escapes recognition by replication inside monocytes, from where it can spread to other tissues and other hosts. Latency-Lentiviruses do not show true latency(unlike Herpes viruses or lambda) but do have the capacity to control the expression of their genome by means of virus-encoded trans-acting regulatory proteins(tat and rev). Antigenic variation-new variants continually arise. In other Lentiviruses such as CAEV, each new antigenic variant results in a flare up of disease.

La variabilité est une stratégie classique des microorganismes persistants; du fait des délais de mise en route de la réponse immunitaire, l'organisme présente toujours un temps de retard sur les variants antigéniques présents dans l'organisme.

Interpretation of changes in bone marrow during infectious processes is quite complex. This paper reports bone marrow lesions observed in pigs inoculated with a moderately virulent ASF virus strain and studies their relationship to the pathogenesis of the disease. In this work, we have carried out the structural and ultra-structural study of the bone marrow of 14 Large White x Landrace pigs that were inoculatd by the intramuscular route with 105 50% hemodsorbing doses(HAD50) of the Dominican Republic' 78 ASF virus strain. The inoculated pigs were killed at 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 days postinjection.

DEF

Death, or necrosis, of bone.

OBS

Osteonecrosis, without evidence of an inflammatory process or sepsis, is usually regarded as secondary to loss of the blood supply(avascular necrosis of bone). Some argue that metabolic changes in the osteocytes are responsible for bone death in certain forms of the disease and recommend the general term osteonecrosis. An older synonym that emphasizes the lack of an inflammatory component is aseptic necrosis. Since the precise pathogenesis remains unknown and major vascular loss is not always evident, the term osteonecrosis seems preferable. [From RHEUD, 1983, p. 157. ]

Prions mediate the pathogenesis of certain neurodegenerative diseases, including bovine spongiform encephalopathy of cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease of humans. The prion particle consists mainly-if not entirely-of PrPSc, a posttranslationally modified isoform of the cellular host-encoded prion protein(PrPc). It has been suggested that additional cellular factors might be involved in the physiological function of PrPc and in the propagation of PrPSc.

Antiheart antibody-dependent cytotoxicity in the sera of mice... antiheart antibodies can be detected in several human diseases such as postcardiotomy, Dressler syndrome, acute rheumatoid fever, and congenital complete heart block....
