Because of the high energy density of cryogenic propellants, a cryogenic upper stage is a significant asset to the payload community. However, the use of cryogenic upper stages in manned programs [was] limited to the Saturn Apollo program, primarily due to safety considerations involving the former shuttle transportation system. There was the risk of a "return to launch site" abort with a full or partial load of cryogenic propellants in the cargo bay, which could overpressurize after landing. 2, record 2, English, - cryogenic%20upper%20stage

... the suprachoroidal injection approach delivers the gene therapy payload via the potential space between the sclera and the choroid(suprachoroidal space, or SCS). This is a potentially favored injection site for gene therapy because it may reduce the likelihood of eliciting an immunologic response due to its unique location with respect to the blood-retina barrier while simultaneously permitting adequate gene expression to control the nAMD [neovascular age-related macular degeneration] disease process. Surgical access to the SCS can be facilitated by creation of a sclerotomy, followed by introduction of a catheter or cannula. Separately, and potentially of greater interest, is for suprachoroidal gene therapy to be delivered in the clinic setting by utilizing hypodermic needles or hollow microneedles. 1, record 4, English, - suprachoroidal%20gene%20therapy

Ariane-5(Expendable Rocket) is part of the European Union's Space Program. At present, the Ariane 5 functions as a Commercial Satellite Launcher and will be used to launch the ATV Cargo/Supply Spacecraft to the International Space station(ISS) in the future. Ariane-5 is the successor to Ariane 4.... The Main Cryogenic Stage is the core of the Ariane 5 launcher. It is 30 meters high and utilizes the Vulcain Rocket Engine. The propellants are liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. Two Solid Rocket Boosters are around 30 metres high. The two solid boosters deliver more than 90 percent of the total launcher's thrust at the start of flight. Upper Stage is used to propel the payload to its final orbit. The upper stage uses storable propellants. Ariane-5 is developing new upper stages, along with modifications to the main cryogenic stage and solid boosters, that will increase performance and meet demands of space commercial launch market. 2, record 39, English, - Ariane%205

One of the intended missions of the DRAC system is to immediately detect all presence or advancing infantry units or vehicles at a particular location or within a specific corridor in the command zone of the reconnaissance units, without having to deploy any ground sensors. Each system consists of two fixed-wing aerial vehicles from the Tracker series, interchangeable gyro-stabilised visible-spectrum and infrared payloads, a data link and a portable, multifunction, ruggedised ground station. The latter in turn comprises two sets of functions : for mission preparation and control and for payload operation respectively. StratSat provides a geo-stationary platform at 20 km altitude capable of remaining on-station for up to five years. Payloads include high speed Internet services, direct broadcast TV, mobile telecommunication, etc. The envelope operates as a super-pressure hull(i. e. with no ballonet pressure control system). The hull will be of laminated fabric construction with Tedlar/Teflon, helium/weather barrier developed from AT-10/04. Multiple catenary curtain system supporting a payload module enclosed completely by the envelope. [The] payload module... comprises a single structural module with an externally mounted payload/mission system. The payload module provides a home for all of the airship's primary systems except for the propulsion system. The systems are close packed within the highly insulated module ensuring efficient heat and energy management. The payload module is pendulum stabilised within the envelope. The solar array provides the sole source of renewable energy for the airship. The array is placed over the upper quarter of the hull and extends over approximately three-quarters of the length of the craft. The array can be realigned to the daily sun location/angle by the roll rotation of the whole airship. The energy collected by the solar array is stored for use during the night in the series of batteries. Located in the stored for use during the night in a series of batteries. Located in the payload module, the batteries run the propulsion system, airship services and provide power to the mission system for up to 14 hours(during winter). The airship is propelled and steered by means of a ’Contra-Rotating Coned Rotor’ mounted on a tailcone at the rear of the envelope, as a part of a compound propulsion system. The unit provides longitudinal thrust(to counter the prevailing stratospheric winds) and lateral force(for manoeuvering) to enable the airship to hold station within a 1 km cube. The airship will be equipped with a multi-channel Flight Control Sy 7, record 65, English, - StratSat%C2%AE

The Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer MERIS forms part of the core instrument payload of ESA's environmental research satellite ENVISAT-1. MERIS is funded by ESA. The demands of the European scientific community for a global environmental monitoring system, whose technical characteristics enable the extraction of quantitative information from ocean colour data, as well as for documentation of the state and evolution of the atmosphere and land surfaces, led to the conception of MERIS. The oceanographic mission is radiometrically the most demanding in terms of low radiance levels and their associated high signal-to-noise ratios. The instrument will be capable of detecting the low levels of radiation emerging from the ocean(linked to the water constituents by the processes of absorption and scattering), in addition to acquiring information about the atmospheric medium through which the observation is made as well as terrestrial environments. The characteristics of MERIS will also be of great value for the retrieval of information on land surfaces, in particular that of global biomass. 5, record 73, English, - medium%20resolution%20imaging%20spectrometer%20MERIS

This type of spray can is a canister containing liquid under pressure from pressurized vapor in equilibrium with another liquid, which often also dissolves the payload. When the can's valve is opened, the liquid is forced out of a small hole and emerges as an aerosol or mist. As gas expands to drive out the payload, some propellant evaporates inside the can to maintain an even pressure. Outside the can, the droplets of propellant evaporate rapidly, leaving the payload suspended as very fine particles or droplets. 2, record 77, English, - aerosol%20spray

The gyros are used to maintain the platform’s inertial orientation by sensing rotations of the platform caused by vehicle-rotation-induced friction at the gimbal pivot points ... One gyro - called the vertical gyro - is oriented so its input axes are aligned with the X and Y platform axes; its input axes provide IMU [Inertial Measurement Unit] platform roll and pitch stabilization. The second gyro is oriented so that one input axis lies along the platform’s Z axis and the other lies in the X-Y plane. This gyro - the azimuth gyro - provides platform yaw stabilization with the Z input axis, while the second input axis is used as a platform rate detector for built-in test equipment. 3, record 82, English, - azimuth%20gyroscope

The sensors for angular velocity are vibrating gyroscopes(3 axes, to detect rotation and pitch/roll pendulations of the payload). An error signal is obtained differencing the signal from the azimuth gyroscope and a constant level settable from the telemetry, which controls the speed of rotation. Such error signal drives an analog PID [Proportional Integral Differential] circuit; the output of the PID is connected to the PWM [Pulse Width Modulation] driver supplying current to the pivot azimuth motors. 3, record 82, English, - azimuth%20gyroscope

The other type of meteorological payload that can be used on a meteorological rocket consists of a falling ROBIN sphere that is used when probing the atmosphere to over 100 km altitude. These altitudes are above the normal operating levels for the thermistors aboard the rocketsonde.... This ROBIN sphere is a spherical shaped balloon constructed of a thin(0. 0001 mm thick) radar-reflective mylar material that is inflated with a small charge of inert gas to a known mass and volume. The dart containing the sphere typically reaches an altitude of 115 km where the sphere is deployed and inflated. When the sphere is inflated to super-pressure of approximately 10-12 mb, the sphere will reach a 1 meter(3. 3. ft) diameter. When the balloon descends to an altitude of approximately 30 km, the air pressure outside the sphere will become greater than that inside, causing the sphere to collapse. 1, record 88, English, - ROBIN%20sphere

Nano crystal Get-Away Special(NANOGAS)-The Nanocrystal Get-Away Special(NANO-GAS) is a Space Shuttle payload designed to grow high-quality crystals of an advanced new class of materials called crystalline nanoporous semiconductors. Because of their unique absorption characteristics, these materials could find applications in high-precision lasers, computers and other high-performance electronic devices. The samples were successfully processed in May 1996 on board Space Shuttle Mission STS-77. An increase in the size and quality of nanoporous crystals can be achieved by conducting these experiments in microgravity, where the gravitational forces are minimal. 2, record 91, English, - nano%20crystal%20%5C%22get%2Daway%20special%5C%22

The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is a European cargo supply vehicle to be used for the International Space Station (ISS). It will be launched by an Ariane-5 Rocket from Kourou in French Guiana. The first ATV is scheduled to be launched to the ISS in 2003. The European Space Agency (ESA) is to launch 9 Ariane-5’s between 2003 and 2014 carrying ATV’s. Each 20 tonne ATV will be placed in 300 km, 51.6 degrees orbit and will then manoeuvre to rendezvous and dock with the ISS. The ATV will provide unpressurized cargo, including propellant and cargo stored in its pressurized compartment including payloads and experiments. The multiplace airplane is used chiefly in an administrative role. It is normally found in the headquarters of units above the regimental level. Its missions require flights over greater distances than those required of the tactical two-place airplane. Generally, it operates between improved airfields; however, it is capable of operating on relatively smooth, unimproved soil fields. In keeping with these operating conditions, its cruising speed, range, and payload are increased, but at some sacrifice of visibility, ability to fly at slow speeds, and ability to land or take off in short distances. For ease of maintenance, its construction is kept as simple as possible. 4, record 97, English, - multiplace%20aeroplane

Serving as a means of aerial reconnaissance and surveillance rather like "an extended pair of binoculars", DRAC enables an operator to gather, display and process real-time images at a distance of up to 10 kilometres, by day or by night. The complete equipment is packed in a rucksack that can be easily transported and deployed by two men. This feature makes DRAC particularly suitable for use by paratroopers. The responsibility for developing and manufacturing the DRAC systems has been conferred on EADS, as overall prime contractor, working in partnership with SurveyCopter. 2, record 98, English, - DRAC%20system
