The thermal control subsystem is a key system on which the successful performance of the spacecraft ultimately depends. Electronics equipment must operate within a relatively narrow temperature band if proper functioning is to be achieved and thermal failure avoided. This operating temperature range must be maintained in a vehicle that will be exposed to extreme temperature gradients. Heat generated internally must also be managed. Typically, satellites will spin to keep any part of the surface from getting too hot or cold.

Le sous-système de thermorégulation est un système essentiel dont dépend au bout du compte la performance du vaisseau spatial. L'équipement électronique doit fonctionner dans une gamme de températures relativement étroites pour obtenir de bons résultats et pour éviter les pannes. Cette fourchette de températures doit être conservée dans un véhicule qui sera exposé à des variations extrêmes de température. Il faut aussi gérer la température produite à l'intérieur du véhicule. De façon traditionnelle, les satellites tournent sur eux-mêmes pour éviter qu'une partie quelconque de leur surface ne devienne trop chaude ou trop froide.

The most significant difference between RADARSAT-2 and RADARSAT-1 payload technology is that RADARSAT-2 uses a fully-active phased array antenna, rather than the passive slotted waveguide antenna used by RADARSAT-1. Fully-active phased arrays offer a number of very significant benefits over passive antenna, but they also add great complexity.... The phased array is made up of 512 individual radiating elements, organized into 16 columns(picture below shows a single column) along the 15-metre antenna length, each with 32 rows across the 1. 5-metre width. The phase shifters and amplitude control are built into the Transmit/Receive(T/R) modules, which feed the radiating elements. Each column has a computer that controls the 32 T/R module settings and these 16 computers are all linked to another computer(in the spacecraft bus) that orchestrates the overall antenna behaviour.

The Electrical Power Subsystem [RADARSAT-2] is responsible for generating, storing, and regulating electrical power for the satellite. Power is generated from the two solar array wings, each consisting of three panels. The solar panels are designed to generate 2400 watts at end-of-life. Power is stored on-board in a Nickel-Hydrogen battery.

The spacecraft bus for RADARSAT-2... SAR payload... Thermal Subsystem : In its sun-synchronous orbit, one side of RADARSAT-2 is usually exposed to continuous sunlight. Between the left-and right-looking imaging mode, different areas of the SAR antenna are exposed to varying intensities of sunlight. Thermal control is required to reflect or dissipate the heat of the Sun on the spacecraft body and SAR antenna, as well as to dissipate the heat that is generated internally by the satellite's electronics.

The standard interfaces to the ISPRs [International Standard Payload Racks] include a MIL-STD-1553B Payload Bus that uses twisted shielded wire pairs and a high rate data link via optical fibers. Commands to the payloads from the ground, crew, and onboard automated procedures are delivered via this 1553B connection as are health, status, safety, and ancillary data types. Each payload location is allowed one remote terminal on the bus.

The Mars Express Orbiter is a cube-shaped spacecraft with two solar panel wings extending from opposite sides. The launch mass of 1123 kg includes a main bus with 113 kg of payload, the 60 kg lander, and 457 kg of propellant. The main body is 1. 5 m x 1. 8 m x 1. 4 m in size, with an aluminium honeycomb structure covered by an aluminium skin. The solar panels measure about 12 m tip-to-tip.
