English

Subject field(s)
  • Orbital Stations
CONT

An Exposed Payload Facility is planned for Columbus. It will consist of two separate support structures attached to the Columbus Pressurized Module end cone in the zenith and nadir positions.

CONT

The principal new feature for an exposed payload facility is the presence of a single, multi-purpose robotic servicing capability. Whilst providing a substantial amount of operational flexibility, this feature requires that careful consideration be given to accommodation aspects.

OBS

exposed payload facility; EPF: term and abbreviation officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).

PHR

COF Exposed Payload Facility (EPF).

CONT

The configuration finally chosen for the EXPERT vehicle is the result of a feasibility study performed under ESA contract, taking into account the payload mass and volume capabilities of the Volna launcher as well as the need to provide appropriate resolution for the aerothermodynamic phenomena of interest. It is basically a "blunt cone" with four flaps and flat surfaces ahead of them. It is 1. 6 m long and 1. 1 m in diameter. It has an elliptically shaped nose(0. 55 m local radius) and a smooth spline to keep the junction between the nose and conical parts continuous.

The 1. 4-million pound mobile launching platform is what the Atlas 5 sits upon from the time it is stacked together in the VIF [Vertical Integration Facility] until the main engine is fired at liftoff.... The platform is 45 feet wide, 55 feet long and 185 feet tall to the top of the mast, which features a wind damper that holds the rocket steady while exposed to the weather on the pad and routes propellant lines to the Centaur and conditioned air to the payload inside the nose cone.
