The Payload Data Acquisition Station is one of the X-band receiving sites in the ENVISAT Ground Segment. It is located at Fucino/Italy. Because the regular Tape Recorder dumps are performed via the two Payload Data Handling Stations, the PDAS serves as a backup facility for temporary outages of one of the PDHS(Payload Data Handling Station).

[National stations] are payload data acquisition and processing facilities provided nationally by ENVISAT mission participants. Their purpose is to either serve national Earth observation strategies, e. g. fast access to products, or to support the nominal downlink scenarios via the Payload Data Handling Stations or the Payload Data Acquisition Station in case of additional coverage needs.

Routine mission operations are based on the use of a single control centre in conjunction with two dedicated ESA ground stations(Redu and Odenwald). All payload operations will be pre-planned and executed according to an agreed plan, which is generated and modified in a periodic mission planning exercise. Real-time operations with the spacecraft will normally be limited to the acquisition of telemetry data recorded during the long non-coverage periods and dumped to the ground station during the real-time contacts, and the uplinking to the on-board memory of time-tagged commands for the execution of all pre-planned spacecraft and payload operations.
