CONT

The Columbus External Payload Facility(CEPF) is a set of structures added to the starboard end-cone of the Columbus module intended to carry four payload adapters mechanically similar to those used in the NASA ExPRESS Pallet(ExP) programme [RD 2]. Unlike the ExP, the CEPF provides one adapter location that normally points to notional zenith, one oriented to notional nadir, and two to starboard.

OBS

In summary, the CEPF provides suitable interfaces for a small sized remote sensing instrument, either internally pointed/stabilised, or tolerating large excursions around a nominal direction. Large fields of view can be accommodated. The ground track pattern is not optimised for localised studies, nor repeatable on the long term due to altitude variations.

Similar to the EXPRESS rack for internal payloads, the accommodations at each of the 6 payload locations are standardized to provide quick and straightforward payload integration. This is accomplished using a standard EXPRESS Pallet Adapter(ExPA) plate to which the payload is permanently mated prior to launch and which is subsequently locked into place on the pallet by the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator on the Station's robotic arm.

Each EXPRESS pallet can accommodate 6 Express Pallet Adapters (ExPA). The ExPA is the base on which the remaining elements of the TEF [Technology Exposed Facility] sit on. It allows the mounting of payloads of dimensions (width x length x eight) 86.36x116.84x124.46 mm (34x46x49"). The ExPA is equipped with a robotic micro-fixture which enables its removal by means of the Space Station Dexterous Manipulator.

CONT

The EXPRESS Pallet Adapter(ExPA) provides an external payload accommodation and interface capability that can be exchanged on-orbit using the Space Station Remote Manipulator System...

Express Pallet. The ExPS is an unpressurized external equipment which, by means of adapter mechanisms, will support external payloads. Each ExPS will accommodate up to six payloads of up to 225 kg for a total launch of 1,36 tons. For each one of them it will be supplied power and data. The adapters will be fully compatible with external robotics operations (EVR) and with crew external activities (EVA). The full up ExPS will be compatible with robotics operations for removal from orbiter cargo bay and assembly in the ISS truss. It will be operational for up to 10 years in orbit with the capability to be launched and returned to Earth several times.

OBS

The Pallets, which will be attached at specific locations on the Truss, can be zenith- or nadir- facing, allowing them to carry instruments requiring solar or celestial viewing (zenith) or Earth viewing (nadir).

The Payload Carriers Team is responsible for MSFC' s [Marshall Space Flight Center] Payload Carriers which is made up of two type of carriers : the Spacelab Logistics Pallet(SLP) and the Multi-Purpose Equipment Support Structure(MPESS). The Payload Carriers "bridge the gap" in payload accommodations available in the Space Shuttle's Payload Bay by providing unique structural, power, data and thermal resources to a variety of payloads. These carriers are designed to transport items safely through the rigors of high acceleration Shuttle launch and the vacuum of space while providing the flexibility to allow the Shuttle to minimize the mass transported to earth orbit.

The fields of view for attached payloads are dependent on payload type and location, with full truss-site payloads having greater latitude in viewing than ExPA payloads. Viewing in the zenith direction for payloads on nadir-pointing truss sites is not generally possible and vice versa. Viewfields for ExPA payloads depend on the payload's position on the pallet and the relative height of adjacent payloads. Positions provide various combinations of viewing in the nadir, zenith, ram, wake, and Earth-limb directions.
