English

Subject field(s)
  • Launchers (Astronautics)
CONT

Because of the high energy density of cryogenic propellants, a cryogenic upper stage is a significant asset to the payload community. However, the use of cryogenic upper stages in manned programs [was] limited to the Saturn Apollo program, primarily due to safety considerations involving the former shuttle transportation system. There was the risk of a "return to launch site" abort with a full or partial load of cryogenic propellants in the cargo bay, which could overpressurize after landing.

Domaine(s)
  • Lanceurs (Astronautique)
CONT

... the suprachoroidal injection approach delivers the gene therapy payload via the potential space between the sclera and the choroid(suprachoroidal space, or SCS). This is a potentially favored injection site for gene therapy because it may reduce the likelihood of eliciting an immunologic response due to its unique location with respect to the blood-retina barrier while simultaneously permitting adequate gene expression to control the nAMD [neovascular age-related macular degeneration] disease process. Surgical access to the SCS can be facilitated by creation of a sclerotomy, followed by introduction of a catheter or cannula. Separately, and potentially of greater interest, is for suprachoroidal gene therapy to be delivered in the clinic setting by utilizing hypodermic needles or hollow microneedles.

CONT

gene therapy: The treatment of certain medical disorders, especially those caused by genetic anomalies or deficiencies, by introducing specific engineered genes into a patient’s cells.

Although ATV [Automated Transfer Vehicle] will dock to the Russian Zvezda module, it will carry most of its dry payload for the US elements of the ISS [International Space Station]. At the launch site in Kourou, French Guiana, six weeks before flight, Jules Verne will be loaded with 1 300 kg of dry cargo out of the 5 500 kg maximum capacity. Most of the dry cargo provided by NASA will be clothes, food, towels and wipes for the crew, logistics items such as batteries and spare parts for maintenance of the Station. This cargo will also include ESA [European Space Agency] experiments such as ANITA, which will constantly monitor the cabin air, and some Russian hardware to be added to the panels of the Station's Russian Service Module.

The Return to Launch Site(RTLS)... abort mode is designed to allow the return of the orbiter, crew and payload to the Kennedy Space Center launch site, approximately 25 minutes after lift-off. The RTLS profile would accommodate the loss of thrust from one main engine between lift-off and approximately four minutes and 20 seconds, at which time not enough MPS propellant remains to return to the launch site. An RTLS would also be used if a time-critical failure occurred that required the earliest possible landing, such as a cabin leak or major cooling system failure.
