In designing ISS [International Space Station] to accommodate sub-rack payloads it became apparent that several advantages would be obtained if investigators building MLE-based [equipment [Mid-Deck Locker Equivalent-based] were provided with host racks with a standardized set of interfaces. Based on this the EXPRESS rack concept was born. EXPRESS stands for Expedite the PRocessing of Experiments to the Space Station. The purpose of the EXPRESS rack is to allow quick... and simple integration of payloads into the ISS. The EXPRESS Rack contains standard interfaces within an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] configuration to allow payloads quick and standard access to ISS resources. The EXPRESS Rack offers structural support hardware, power conversion and distribution equipment, data and video equipment, nitrogen and vacuum exhaust distribution hardware, and thermal support equipment.

CONT

The Spacehab's Logistics Double Module [LDM] is a 20-foot long, 14-foot wide, 11. 2-foot high pressurized aluminum module carried in Atlantis’ payload bay and connected to the middeck area of the orbiter by an access tunnel. For STS-106, the LDM will carry approximately 8, 100 pounds of hardware, equipment and logistical supplies to outfit the International Space Station. Designed to augment the Shuttle's middeck, the double module has a total cargo capacity of up to 10, 000 pounds and contains the systems necessary to support the crewmembers, such as ventilation, lighting and limited power.

The European Drawer Rack(EDR) provides a modular capability for sub-rack payloads contained in Standard Experiment Drawers(SEDs) and Mid-Deck Lockers(MDLs) accommodated in an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack]. The EDR supports the independent operation of the multiple sub-rack payload hardware as well as the provision of a standardised interface to laboratory resources. It supports payload exchange at SED or MDL level. A fundamental goal of the EDR is to support the development of smaller sub-rack payloads through the provision of accommodation and flight opportunities where quick turnaround mission objectives are required.

The Window Observational Research Facility(WORF). The WORF will provide a stable platform such that the full capacity of the U. S. Laboratory window(the highest optical quality window ever flown on an inhabited spacecraft) can be utilized. The WORF will provide payload support infrastructure including mounting hardware, power, cooling, and access to the ISS [International Space Station] data system. The WORF will provide protection for the interior of the Lab window and control stray light exchange between the Lab interior and the external Station environment. The WORF will be economically based upon structures and electronics already designed and certified for operation onboard the ISS and will allow easy periodic upgrade and changeout of support subsystems. WORF computer interfaces will maximize commonality with ISS command and data handling systems.
