NRC' s Plant Biotechnology Institute is dedicated to plant and crop research. PBI is a leader in the metabolic modification of oilseeds to increase oil content and to create specialty plant oils for new markets. Similar research is altering wheat starch for novel uses and to meet new international markets. Investigation of metabolic pathways has also led to a significant reduction in anti-nutritional compounds in common commercial crops.

Peace Brigades International(PBI) is a unique grassroot organization exploring and implementing nonviolent approaches to peacekeeping and support for basic human rights. By invitations, PBI sends teams of volunteers who go into areas of political repression and conflict. PBI provides protective international accompaniment for individuals and organizations who have been threatened by political violence or who are otherwise at risk. In this way, PBI enlarges the space for local activists to work for social justice and human rights, while at the same time being non-partisan : not telling them what to do, how to do it, or how their future should be formed.

Selling phoney bank letters of credit at discount prices by telling victim-investors that they will be offered a $10-million guaranteed bank note for $8 million. Since many are small-time investors, they are told their stake, even a few hundred dollars, will be pooled with that of others. They are told the paper can be cashed at full value at the bank, usually offshore, at a specified later date, or traded like a stock or bond to other investors. Then they are made to sign a confidentiality agreement.
