Effect on radio waves in high latitudes, caused by a sudden increase in the electron concentration in the D layer of the ionosphere.

Polar Cap Absorption. The ionisation of the D region over the polar latitudes by high energy solar protons causes radio blackouts for transpolar circuits which can last for several days. PCAs are almost always preceded by a major solar flare on the visible hemisphere of the sun. The time between the flare event and the onset of the PCA ranges from a few minutes to several hours.

OBS

The effect is produced by the influx of high energy solar protons; it begins a few hours after a solar flare is observed and may in exceptional cases persist for a few days.

Les éruptions solaires peuvent être accompagnées de flux de particules de très haute énergie se propageant à une vitesse avoisinant celle de la lumière. Ces particules (principalement des protons et des électrons) pénètrent dans la haute atmosphère dans des régions situées près des pôles magnétiques. De ce fait, les niveaux inférieurs de l'ionosphère polaire deviennent très ionisés, ce qui provoque une absorption intense des signaux radioélectriques haute et très haute fréquence. Ce phénomène est connu sous le nom d'absorption à la calotte polaire (ACP) et peut durer plusieurs jours, voire plusieurs semaines dépendant de la puissance du flux des particules solaires et de l'emplacement de la région émettrice sur le Soleil. Il est souvent impossible d'établir des radiocommunications à haute fréquence pendant la durée des évènements d'ACP.

CONT

Une PCA est souvent suivie dans les 48 heures par un début brusque d'orage magnétique puis d'une tempête géomagnétique mineure ou majeure, environ trois à huit heures plus tard.

OBS

L'effet est produit par l'arrivée d'un flux de protons solaires de haute énergie. Il commence quelques heures après l'observation d'une éruption solaire et, dans des cas exceptionnels, il peut persister pendant quelques jours.
