The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 1, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

3, record 2, French, - Trait%C3%A9%20de%20Paix

The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact. 1, record 6, English, - International%20Campaign%20to%20Ban%20Landmines

1, record 6, French, - Campagne%20internationale%20pour%20interdire%20les%20mines

The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty that officially ended World War I. It was signed on June 28, 1919, exactly 5 years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, one of the events that triggered the start of the war. Although the armistice signed on November 11, 1918 put an end to the actual fighting, it took six months of negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to conclude a peace treaty. Of the many provisions in the treaty, one of the most important and controversial provisions required Germany and its allies to accept full responsibility for causing the war and, under the terms of articles 231-248, disarm, make substantial territorial concessions and pay reparations to certain countries that had formed the Entente powers. 1, record 18, English, - Treaty%20of%20Versailles

The term "peace treaty" usually refers to a treaty between belligerents ending a war, through sometimes it refers to a treaty to prevent future wars. The two concepts are often combined, because in treaties ending wars, the parties have often pledged themselves to "perpetual peace". The terms of such treaties, however, are often so onerous that they stimulate the defeated state, which has signed under duress, to renew hostilities when the opportunity arises. 2, record 24, English, - peace%20treaty

Although ready to terminate the war through a treaty of peace, belligerents are frequently not able to settle all the terms at once. In such cases hostilities are usually brought to an end through so-called preliminaries of peace, the definitive treaty to take the place of the preliminaries being concluded later on. Such preliminaries are a treaty in themselves, embodying an agreement between the parties regarding such terms of peace as are essential. Preliminaries are as binding as any other treaty, and therefore need ratification. Very often, but not necessarily, the definitive treaty of peace is concluded at a place other than that at which the preliminaries were settled. 1, record 52, English, - preliminaries%20of%20peace

... a preliminary treaty of peace may be either of two things. Sometimes it is only a promise to conclude a final treaty of peace, that is to say, a simple pactum de contrahendo. But sometimes also a preliminary treaty of peace contains clauses which manifestly restore peace, although the settlement of certain questions is altogether reserved for the final treaty. 2, record 52, English, - preliminaries%20of%20peace

Armistices may be... general when all armed operations are suspended [or they may be] partial or local... One modern trend in regard to general armistices, however, is that they represent no mere temporary halting of hostilities, but a kind of de facto termination of war, which is confirmed by the final treaty of peace. In the case of a non-war armed conflict, as, for example, the Korean conflict, 1950-1953, the armistice puts an end to the conflict, and it may also be that a final peaceful settlement is contemplated by the contending parties. 1, record 53, English, - general%20armistice
