PH DECLINE [3 records]

Record 1 2023-01-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Sponges, Hydrozoans and Jellyfish
  • Climate Change
CONT

Ocean acidification causing coral ’osteoporosis’ on iconic reefs... Animals that rely on calcium carbonate to create their skeletons, such as corals, are at risk as ocean pH continues to decline(become more acidic). Ocean acidification targets the density of the skeleton, silently whittling away the coral' s strength, much like osteoporosis weakens bones in humans.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éponges, hydres et méduses
  • Changements climatiques
CONT

Universal entry(ies)
DEF

Logarithm of the reciprocal of the hydrogen-ion concentration in a solution (-log10[H+]) used as a measure of the degree of acidity or alkalinity of this solution.

CONT

Roughly, pH can be divided into the following ranges: pH 0-2: Strongly acidic; pH 3-5: Weakly acidic; pH 6-8: Neutral; pH 9-11: Weakly basic; pH 12-14: Strongly basic. Under the Controlled Products Regulations, materials with pH values of 0-2 or 11.5-14 may be classified corrosive.

OBS

A pH of 7 is regarded as neutral (pure water), a pH less than 7 corresponds to an acid solution and a pH greater than 7 corresponds to an alkaline solution.

OBS

It should be noted that the pH scale is a logarithmic scale; a substance with a pH of 4 is more than twice as acid as a substance with a pH of 5. Similarly, a substance with a pH of 9 is much more than twice as alkaline as a substance with a pH of 8.

PHR

Entrée(s) universelle(s)
DEF

PHR

valor de pH.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
  • Water Pollution
CONT

Studies done in the past two years have shown that acidic snow resulted in severe depression of pH in streams and surface water of lakes during the spring runoff. The maximum increase in hydrogen ion concentration in the ten streams surveyed to date was up to 15 times the annual average. A spring pH depression is coincident with spring spawning of some species of fish and amphibians.

OBS

A pH drop is a sudden pH depression.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'air
  • Pollution de l'eau
CONT
