PHOTOCHEMICAL POLLUTANT [5 records]

Record 1 2011-08-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
Universal entry(ies)
DEF

A colorless poisonous gas having the formula NO which is obtained by oxidation of nitrogen or ammonia in making nitric acid or by reduction of nitrous acid, which readily reacts with oxygen at room temperature to form nitrogen dioxide, NO2, a reddish brown gas, and which is used as an intermediate in the production of nitric acid from ammonia, in the preparation of nitrosyl carbonyls, and for bleaching rayon.

OBS

It is found in variable trace quantities in the atmosphere, especially near industrial areas.

CONT

Not in itself a pollutant, in the ambient air NO converts to nitrogen dioxide, a major contributor to photochemical smog.

OBS

nitrogen monoxide: form recommended by the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) for the systematic name corresponding to the CAS number indicated on the present record.

OBS

nitric oxide: term adopted by Environment Canada; used in the list of pollutants measured in the National Air Pollution Surveillance Network (NAPS).

OBS

Record 2 2010-10-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Pollutants
  • Air Pollution
DEF

A pollutant that results from the chemical reactions involving primary pollutants or related atmospheric contaminants, for example, oxidants from photochemical activity.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Agents de pollution
  • Pollution de l'air
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
CONT

... NOx can exert three different kinds of environmental effect. First, NOx is a direct pollutant; second, NOx can produce indirect pollutant effects by acting in combination with other pollutants to produce ozone and photochemical smog; and third, NOx from all sources, including motor vehicles, contributes to Canada's acid rain problem.
