The boreal forest is divided into two great transcontinental belts of approximately equal size : the subarctic open lichen woodland and the closed crown forest. This major horizontal sectioning of the two areas reflects the steady dropping of temperature from south to north. The more northern subarctic lichen woodland is a handsome landscape mostly unknown to Canadians because of its few settlements and roads(and also very abundant black flies!). Northern stands of scattered spruce and jack pine, accompanied by balsam fir in Quebec, form attractive open-canopied areas carpeted with yellow, green and light grey lichens. Recently burned areas are covered with birch, blueberries and other small evergreen shrubs. 2, record 8, English, - lichen%20woodland

One of the three main forest types in the world. Temperate forests are composed mainly of deciduous trees. The other two types are the tropical evergreen forest and the northern coniferous forest (boreal forest). 2, record 9, English, - temperate%20forest
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Temperate forests occur within the temperate, non-tropical zone. Temperate forests occur north of the Tropic of Cancer and south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Temperate forests usually have fairly distributed rainfall and moderate temperatures, in contrast to tropical forests which generally experience extremes in rainfall and high temperature.... There are a number of different types of temperate forest. These include :(i) the largely coniferous boreal forests which flourish in the far north containing species such as cypress, cork oak, and stone pine, which grow on the shores and islands of the Mediterranean; and(iii) austral forests, which grow in New Zealand, Southern Australia, South Africa, and the Patagonia region of South America. 3, record 9, English, - temperate%20forest

The percentages vary somewhat among the species groups : hemlock, cedar and Douglas-fir(predominantly west coast species) have proportionally more merchantable stem wood biomass than spruce, pine, and fir; this is at least partly due to the larger average tree size. 2, record 10, English, - merchantable%20bole
