Its final report, Dealing with Drug Abuse..., analyzed in detail the great gaps in basic knowledge of drug actions within the body, psychological factors involved in deciding to use drugs, and the role of drugs in contemporary American society; it also made a strong appeal for more research. The report's practical outcome was the creation of the Drug Abuse Council(DAC), which funded studies on illicit drug abuse from 1971 until 1978.

Dog trained to detect human scent that is in or under snow, subsequent to an avalanche.

The trained search dog works a snowfield rapidly, searching for "pools" of human scent rising up through the snow pack. When the dog finds a potential scent source he will bury his head into the snow trying to locate the source. If the human smell intensifies, he begins to dig trying to get closer to the source. If the scent becomes weaker, a trained dog will start to work outwards from the area to attempt to either pinpoint an area of stronger buried source or rule the scent out as surface odor left by human searchers.... A well-trained avalanche rescue dog... is equivalent to approximately 20-foot searchers and can search the same area in an eighth of the time.

These consist of small loops or "circles" of viral DNA that can be found in white blood cells. By detecting and tracking the circles it is possible to show that the virus is alive.

What is "cone of scent"? Odour particles always travel in the shape of a cone. A cone of scent is always concentrated and narrow at the source, and becomes wider and more diluted the further it travels. When a detector dog detects a substance that it has been trained to interdict, it uses the cone of scent to pinpoint the source of the odour. It starts by moving from one side to the other and back again in order to define the search area. Then, by moving up and down the cone, the dog can determine in which direction the odour becomes stronger. The dog can then follow the ever-narrowing cone of scent to its source.

The problem was solved with the next significant concept of airport lighting-the principle of "controlled intensity". Controlled or engineered intensity means that runway lights having practical pinpoint sources, with the beam aimed in the direction of the incoming pilot, could have the intensity of this beam controlled by either shifting the beam axis or more generally by varying the brightness of the lamp. Thus, high candle power is available to "punch through" heavy weather, but it is subject to brightness control for visual comfort.
