Record 1, Textual support, English
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A nanoparticle composed of a [gold] metallic shell surrounding a semiconductor. 7, record 1, English, - gold%20nanoshell
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
When nanoshells reach a target cancer cell, they can be irradiated with near-infrared light or excited with a magnetic field, either of which will cause the nanoshell to become hot, killing the cancer cell. 7, record 1, English, - gold%20nanoshell
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
This chemical sensing technique relies on nanoparticles consisting of gold and silica called nanoshells, invented 10 years ago at Rice by nanophotonics pioneer Naomi Halas. Nanoshells are about 20 times smaller than a red blood cell, and they can amplify light waves and focus them so tightly that scientists can use them to detect just a few molecules of a target chemical. Building catalysts directly on the surface of the nanoparticles themselves allows researchers to use the nanosensing capabilities of nanoshells to directly follow chemical reactions on the catalyst using light. 8, record 1, English, - gold%20nanoshell

Record 2, Textual support, English
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A sensory neuron that differentiates before the others and forges an axonal path from the periphery to the CNS [central nervous system] for the other (follower) cell axons to follow. 3, record 2, English, - pioneer%20cell
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Follower neurons do not need special pathfinding abilities. If pioneer cells are killed, however, the next sensory neuron will differentiate into a pioneer cell and find its way to the CNS [central nervous system]. 4, record 2, English, - pioneer%20cell
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Axon growth along pathways formed by guideposts often results in the establishment of pioneer neurons. Their axons serve as a pathway for additional neurons that develop later in the embryo and project their axons to the appropriate target. In many systems pioneer neurons are eliminated by programmed cell-death and are not present in the adult. 2, record 2, English, - pioneer%20cell

1, record 2, Spanish, - neurona%20pionera
