Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
  • Types of Ships and Boats
CONT

... floating drilling vessels [include] the two surface-type mobile units, i.e., the ship and barge units, and the column-stabilized or semi-submersible units.

CONT

Drilling vessels that are essentially of ship or barge type, of normal configuration and proportions, and which operate in all conditions as typical surface displacement vessels, are to have scantlings that meet the requirements of "Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels" or "Rules for Building and Classing Steel Barges for Offshore Service" of current issue. Additional consideration for unusual loadings due to drilling operations, mooring, etc., and for unusual configurations such as catamarans, outriggers, etc., will be specially considered ...

CONT

The E-Z tree is a valve-latch assembly landed in the B.O.P. stack to form a temporary production tree during offshore tests carried out from a floating drilling vessel.

OBS

Floating drilling rigs are normally referred to as "drill vessels" or "drilling vessels" and are in the truest sense of the word "vessels." For a seafaring man, however, they differ in many respects from his general conception of a vessel. [As opposed to the traditional vessel,] the drill vessel often anchors for weeks and even months at one location. It may move only short distances from well to well. Seldom, if ever, does it need to visit port except for major repair or inspection. ... Many drill vessels, semi-submersibles for instance, cannot even be handled in present dry-dock facilities because of their size.

OBS

Vessel. Means every vessel which by means of its special outfit, purpose, design, or function engages in certain industrial ventures. Included in this classification are such vessels as drill rigs, missile range ships, dredges, cable layers, derrick barges, pipe lay barges, construction and wrecking barges. Excluded from this classification are vessels carrying freight for hire or engaged in oceanography, limnology, or the fishing industry.

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
  • Types de bateaux
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Long-Distance Pipelines
  • Transport of Oil and Natural Gas
  • Engineering
CONT

The current use of strain-based design has many project-specific components. This limits the ability of a "cookbook" approach where each step can be laid out as part of common design sequence to apply to all areas of pipe strain-based design. This situation would indicate that taking the current state-of-the-art methods and creating a code or standard would be ineffective at covering the range of needs for future pipeline designs. Yet, because there are many choices that are part of a particular pipeline strain-based design, the availability of guidance and recommended practices can help simplify the design and qualification process for many pipelines.

OBS

The primary areas where strain-based design will be used are in design of reeled laying of offshore pipelines, in thermal design of arctic pipelines, in design of types of offshore pipelay systems, in design and assessment of pipelines in areas with significant expected ground movement, and in HT/HP [high-temperature/high-pressure] pipeline designs.

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Pulp Preparation (papermaking)
OBS

High-Consistency System. Figure 11-18 shows a representative system where pulp is handled in the 25% to 28% consistency range. Typically, a press is used to raise the feed consistency to about 30%. Fresh caustic or oxidized white liquor along with the magnesium protector is added to the pulp at the discharge of the press. A thick stock pump then transfers the pulp to a fluffer via a feed pipe in which a gas-tight plug is formed. The fluffed pulp flows down the pressurized reactor as a loose bed, while gaseous oxygen is continuously dissolved into the liquid phase and reacted with the pulp.... Oxygen gas is added to either top or bottom to maintain a partial pressure within the 90 to 130 psi range. Relief is taken from the head space at the top of the tower to remove combustibles and other noncondensible gases, and control overall reactor pressure. At the bottom of the tower, the reacted pulp is diluted with post-oxygen filtrate and pumped at about 6% consistency to a blow tank.
