Subject field(s)
  • Baseball and Softball
DEF

A fast pitch that makes a slight curve in the direction opposite of the throwing arm as it nears the plate.

CONT

A good curve ball breaks sharply to the side and downward as it reaches the batter. A slider is like a curve ball, but seems to "slide" rather than to break sharply.

DEF

Subject field(s)

CONT

... a separate and more serious failure arose with the arm's shoulder pitch joint. The joint's electronics are unable to receive commands from the ACU via the arm's backup control string. When the joint failure manifests itself, the arm's entire redundant electronics string is paralyzed, rendering the crane's backup control side useless. Without the redundant path, the arm would have to operate only on its primary side with no margin for failure during operations.

ERA [European Robotic Arm] is a large robot by any standards-it is about 11. 3 m long and weighs some 630 kg. It is functionally symmetrical, with each end supporting an "End Effector" that works either as a hand for the robot or as a base from which the arm can operate. ERA has seven joints(in order : roll, yaw, pitch, pitch, pitch, yaw, roll), of which six can operate at any one time. This configuration allows ERA to relocate itself on to different "Basepoints" on the SPP [Science Power Platform] using an End-Effector-mounted camera to locate a Basepoint accurately.

CONT

L'ERA, ou European Robotic Arm. [...]

CONT

Methods that use vision to locate a workpiece and the sites on it suitable for gripping have been reported by Birk(et al.) They proposed three approaches each of which utilizes two distinct phases called the instruction phase and the execution phase.... The first approach, called appearance acquisition uses an instruction phase to calibrate the system to the appearance of the workpiece. The robot reorients the workpiece by rotating it in two dimensions while keeping the origin of the workpiece coordinate system constant. As the part is rotated in pitch and roll, sample observations are made. Proper grip are sites are taught by placing the part in its final position, moving the robot to the end position, and having it grip in the copying mode. The robot's arm joint positions are recorded, and the relation between the gripper and the workpiece coordinate system is computed. When this relationship is reestablished, the system knows that the part is being grasped properly. In the execution phase workpieces in the supply bin are viewed by the vision system, which looks for the features sampled during the instruction phase.
