CONT

The bass drum, or kick drum, is a large drum that produces a note of low definite or indefinite pitch. The instrument is typically cylindrical, with the drum's diameter much greater than the drum's depth, with a struck head at both ends of the cylinder.

OBS

Kick drums are also known as bass drums—but they’re distinct from the type of bass drums used in classical music ensembles. Orchestral bass drums tend to be far larger than drum kit bass drums. Unlike drum kit bass drums, which sit on the floor, orchestral bass drums sit suspended off the ground. And while drummers strike kick drums with a bass drum pedal, they strike orchestral bass drums with handheld beaters—usually mallets but sometimes standard drumsticks.

Rapid vertical oscillations of the column of a mercury barometer.

CONT

The mercurial barometer... in its simplest form... consists of a glass tube a little more than 30 inches in length and of uniform internal diameter. With one end closed, the tube is filled with mercury, and inverted into a cup of mercury. The mercury in the tube falls until the column is just supported by the pressure of the atmosphere on the open cup, leaving a vacuum at the upper end of the tube. The height of the column indicates atmospheric pressure, greater pressures supporting higher columns of mercury. The mercurial barometer is subject to rapid variations in height, called pumping, due to pitch and roll of the vessel and temporary changes in atmospheric pressure in the vicinity of the barometer. Because of this... the mercurial barometer has been replaced at sea by the aneroid barometer.

The unified thread form accompanied by the unified thread standards has in the past fulfilled the necessary requirements for interchangeability of threaded products between the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. This modified thread form represented two compromises between British Whitworth and United Stated National thread forms. The British accepted the 60° thread angle of the American thread, and the Americans accepted a rounded root and crest similar to the Whitworth form. The United States National unified form for external threads has a rounded root and may have either a rounded or flat crest. The unified thread contours provide advantages over both the earlier forms .... The unified thread is a general-purpose thread that is particularly suited for fasteners.

In general, the unified screw threads are limited to three series : coarse(UNC), fine(UNF), and extrafine(UNEF). A 1/4-inch.-diameter thread in the UNC series has 20 threads/in., while in the UNF series it has 28. In the unified and American National standards, the coarse thread series(UNC and NC) is recommended for general industrial use on threaded machine parts and for screws and bolts. Because a coarse thread has fewer threads per inch than a fine thread of the same diameter, the helix angle is greater, and the thread travels farther in one turn. A coarse thread is preferred when rapidity and ease of assembly are desired, and where strength and clamping power are not of prime importance.

CONT

Unified and American National screw thread standards for screws, bolts, nuts, and other threaded parts consist of six series of threads [UNC or NC; UNF or NF; UNEF or NEF; 8UN or 8N; 12UN or 12N; 16UN or 16N] and a selection of special threads that cover nonstandard combinations of diameter and pitch... The 8-thread series(8N) with 8 threads/in. for all diameters is used on bolts for high-pressure flanges, cylinder-head studs, and other fasteners against pressure, where it is required that an initial tension be set up so that the joint will not open when steam or other pressure is applied. This series has come into general use for many types of engineering work. It is sometimes used as a substitute for the coarse thread series for diameters greater then 1 in.

"8N": for the American National thread. "8UN": for the Unified National thread.

Unified and American National screw thread standards for screws, bolts, nuts, and other threaded parts consist of six series of threads and a selection of special threads that cover nonstandard combinations of diameter and pitch. In general, the unified screw threads are limited to three series : coarse(UNC), fine(UNF), and extrafine(UNEF). A 1/4-inch-diameter thread in the UNC series has 20 threads/in., while in the UNF series it has 28.

A 1/4-inch.-diameter thread in the UNC series has 20 threads/in., while in the UNF series it has 28.... The fine thread series(UNF and NF) is recommended for general use in the automotive and air craft fields for threads subject to strong vibration. In general, a fine thread should be used only where close adjustment, extra strength, or increased resistance to loosening is a factor.

CONT

Threads are designated by standardized notes. Under the unified system, threads are specified by giving in order the nominal diameter, number of threads per inch, the initial letters such as UNC or UNF that identify the series, and class of thread (1A, 2A, and 3A or 1B, 2B, and 3B). Threads are considered to be right-hand and single unless otherwise noted; therefore the specification for a left-hand thread must have the letters LH included.

The three-wire method of measuring threads is... recognized as one of the best methods of checking the pitch diameter because the results are least affected by an error which may be present in the included thread angle.... Three wires, of equal diameter, are placed in thread; two on one side and one on the other side.... A standard micrometer may then be used to measure the distance over the wires.

Threads may also be checked by the screw-thread-comparator micrometer which has two conical measuring surfaces. Since it does not measure the pitch diameter, it is important to set this instrument to a thread plug gauge before measuring a threaded workpiece.
