The axis which runs from wing tip to wing tip through the centre of gravity.

The pitch axis is perpendicular to the aircraft centerline and lies in the plane of the wings. A pitch motion is an up or down movement of the nose of the aircraft... The pitching motion is being caused by the deflection of the elevator of this aircraft. The elevator is a hinged section at the rear of the horizontal stabilizer. There is usually an elevator on each side of the vertical stabilizer. The elevators work in pairs; when the right elevator goes up, the left elevator also goes up.

The aircraft can rotate around three axes: the fore-and-aft axis (or the roll axis); the span-wise (nose-up/nose-down) axis or the pitch axis; and the nose-left/nose-right, or yaw axis.

La gouverne de profondeur est un volet mobile situé sur l'arrière de l'empennage horizontal, qui lui-même est placé vers la queue de l'appareil. En modifiant l'angle de la gouverne de profondeur, le pilote modifie la force agissant sur l'empennage horizontal et, grâce à un bras de levier important, cette variation de force fait piquer ou cabrer l'avion autour de l'axe de tangage, axe horizontal passant par le centre de gravité de l'avion. Cette commande permet de régler l'incidence de l'avion.

Lorsque l’appareil avait accompli son vol de transfert vers la société chargée de sa maintenance, le pilote [...] avait réalisé un test d’assiette en mode direct par câble (manual reversion), c’est-à-dire sans utiliser les systèmes hydrauliques A et B et donc sans utiliser les ailerons permettant d'actionner la gouverne de profondeur (balance tabs). Il avait alors remarqué que la compensation en tangage (pitch trim) nécessaire pour maintenir l’appareil à son niveau de vol était dans les limites, mais de justesse.
