The gyros are used to maintain the platform's inertial orientation by sensing rotations of the platform caused by vehicle-rotation-induced friction at the gimbal pivot points... One gyro-called the vertical gyro-is oriented so its input axes are aligned with the X and Y platform axes; its input axes provide IMU [Inertial Measurement Unit] platform roll and pitch stabilization. The second gyro is oriented so that one input axis lies along the platform's Z axis and the other lies in the X-Y plane. This gyro-the azimuth gyro-provides platform yaw stabilization with the Z input axis, while the second input axis is used as a platform rate detector for built-in test equipment. 3, record 11, English, - azimuth%20gyroscope

The sensors for angular velocity are vibrating gyroscopes (3 axes, to detect rotation and pitch/roll pendulations of the payload). An error signal is obtained differencing the signal from the azimuth gyroscope and a constant level settable from the telemetry, which controls the speed of rotation. Such error signal drives an analog PID [Proportional Integral Differential] circuit; the output of the PID is connected to the PWM [Pulse Width Modulation] driver supplying current to the pivot azimuth motors. 3, record 11, English, - azimuth%20gyroscope

Stabilisation and orientation by inertial flywheels consists in accurately aligning the axes of three flywheels with the axes of reference(roll, pitch and yaw)... The spherical orienter... uses the principle of inertial reaction. It consists essentially of a floating sphere supported electrostatically, magnetically or by an air cushion. This sphere can thus turn freely about any axis, friction being negligible. If the stator... exercises a couple on the sphere, it responds to this stress by an equal and opposite reaction couple, until it has attained its limiting speed or rotation(saturation). 1, record 23, English, - spherical%20orienter

Spacecraft axes. The three orthogonal axes of rotation : roll, pitch and yaw. If the spacecraft has a recognisable longitudinal axis or a specified forward direction of flight, the axes are analogous to those of an aircraft, where the roll axis is the longitudinal axis; the pitch axis is in the plane of the wings; and the yaw axis is the "vertical" axis, orthogonal to both the roll and pitch axes. The axes are mutually perpendicular, with an "origin" at the vehicle's centre of mass. For a winged spacecraft such as a Space Shuttle, the similarity with an aircraft is obvious. For expendable launch vehicles the roll axis is the axis which is vertical at launch and the other axes are more-or-less arbitrarily assigned since the vehicle rotates about the roll axis in flight.... The axes of a cylindrical spacecraft(e. g. Apollo, Suyuz, etc.) are similar to those of an ELV [Expendable Launch Vehicle] at launch, but one orbit assume the axis-definition of an aircraft(i. e. defined relative to the pilot's seat). The axes of a satellite mirror those of an aircraft "flying along the orbital arc" : the roll axis is aligned with the direction of travel; the yaw axis passes through the sub-satellite point; and the pitch axis is orthogonal to the other two. For a satellite in an equatorial orbit, the pitch axis is aligned approximately with the Earth's spin axis. Preprocessing is an important and diverse set of image preparation programs that act to offset problems with the band data and recalculate DN [Digital Number] values that minimize these problems. Among the programs that optimize these values are atmospheric correction(affecting the DNs of surface materials because of radiance from the atmosphere itself, involving attenuation and scattering) ;Sun illumination geometry; surface-induced geometric distortions; spacecraft velocity and attitude variations(roll, pitch, and yaw) ;effects of Earth rotation, elevation, curvature(including skew effects), abnormalities of instrument performance(irregularities of detector response and scan mode such as variations in mirror oscillations) ;loss of specific scan lines(requires destriping), and others. Once performed on the raw data, these adjustments require appropriate radiometric and geometric corrections. 2, record 27, English, - preprocessing

ERA [European Robotic Arm] is a large robot by any standards-it is about 11. 3 m long and weighs some 630 kg. It is functionally symmetrical, with each end supporting an "End Effector" that works either as a hand for the robot or as a base from which the arm can operate. ERA has seven joints(in order : roll, yaw, pitch, pitch, pitch, yaw, roll), of which six can operate at any one time. This configuration allows ERA to relocate itself on to different "Basepoints" on the SPP [Science Power Platform] using an End-Effector-mounted camera to locate a Basepoint accurately. 2, record 34, English, - basepoint

The ISS [International Space Station] flies in an attitude that is referenced to the orbital plane of ISS using a set of local vertical/local-horizontal axes. The origin is at the ISS centre of mass, with the x-axis pointing along the direction of the orbital velocity vector (sometimes referred to as the "ram" direction). The z-axis points directly towards the Earth, and the y-axis parallel to the truss assembly ... This orientation is referred to as "x-axis toward the velocity vector" Torque Equilibrium Attitude and is the "normal" orientation of the ISS. The overall ISS design is optimised to fly in this attitude, which places the most laboratory modules in the "best" microgravity volume, supports attitude reboosts, service vehicle docking and minimises aerodynamic drag. 3, record 35, English, - local%20vertical%20local%20horizontal

2, record 41, French, - perturbation%20d%27attitude%20en%20roulis

The on-orbit Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem(ADACS) provides three axis pointing control for the satellite. The ADACS maintains system pointing by controlling torque in three mutually orthogonal wheels. The torque is determined by analysis of spacecraft orientation in space. Input to these computations are acquired from the Earth Sensor Assembly(ESA) for pitch and roll, and an inertial reference with sun sensor updates for yaw. 2, record 44, English, - inertial%20reference

The pitch and roll gyros were torqued by signals obtained by two Barnes mod IIA infrared horizon sensors. Gyrocompassing oriented the vehicle to an orbit plane yaw reference by detecting a component of the programmed pitch rate through the roll horizon sensor. The geocentric pitch rate(typically 4 deg/min, for a low-altitude orbit) was programmed as a constant torque to the pitch gyro. This pitch component, if a yaw error was present, would be sensed differentially when compared with the roll components of the two horizon-sensor heads. The description of the Station's flight attitude(orientation relative to the plane of its orbit) is referenced to local-vertical/local-horizontal(LVLH) axes that are fixed with respect to the Station's near-circular orbit(i. e., not to the physical Station). The LVLH origin is at the Station's center-of-mass; the z-axis points radially toward the Earth's center(or toward the nadir direction), the x-axis points along the orbital velocity vector(the ram direction, with wake being opposite), and the y-axis completes the right-handed triad. The flight attitude of the Station is then described using a second, Station-fixed, coordinate system whose orientation relative to LVLH is specified using the Eulerian angles of yaw, pitch and roll. Several Station-fixed coordination systems are defined. The most widely used is the Space Station Reference Coordinate System,... in thich the positive x-axis points along the axis of the U. S. lab away from the Zarya and Service Modules; the positive y-axis points starboard along the main truss, and positive z completes a right-handed coordinate system. 2, record 50, English, - Station%26rsquo%3Bs%20flight%20attitude

The gyropilot, commonly called an automatic pilot(q. v.), consists basically of three devices, each of which detects disturbances for the aircraft in one plane and corrects for these disturbances by moving the appropriate control : the rudder control for azimuth and sudden change in heading(yaw) disturbances, aileron control for roll disturbance, and elevator control for pitch disturbance. In modern gyropilots rate detection forms the principal reference and displacements detection plays a secondary role. In such designs yaw disturbance is detected by a rate gyroscope and the change in heading is detected by the associated gyrocompass. 1, record 53, English, - yaw%20disturbance

The Ausroc 3(A3) launch vehicle has a liquid fuelled motor that burns JA-1 kerosene with liquid oxygen, and uses regenerative cooling. The motor produces 35 kN at sea level and has a burn time of 80 seconds. The motor is gimballed to facilitate pitch and yaw control. The wall of the combustion chamber, throat and expansion nozzle consists of 102 stainless steel tubes stacked side by side running parallel to the motor axis. The tubes will be brazed together and the assembly wrapped in a carbon fibre composite. The composite wrapping is used to relieve to tubes of the hoop stress generated by the combustion pressure(2 MPa), whilst the tubes contain the combustion heat(3500 K). The top end of the motor has a kerosene inlet manifolt, oxygen dome and injector block. The kerosene inlet manifold delivers kerosene to every second motor tube, where it travels down to the arse end of the motor. Here it enters the lower kerosene manifold which is a simple plenum ring. This allows the kerosene to flow into the other alternate tubes which deliver it back up to the inlet manifold. The inlet manifold then directs the kerosene to the injector block, which sprays it and the liquid oxygen into the combustion chamber. 2, record 54, English, - liquid%20fuelled%20motor
